UFC 269: Charles Oliveira vs. Dustin Poirier Odds, Prediction
The final UFC pay-per view events of the year are always stacked with high quality fights and Saturday’s UFC 269 main card is no different. The main event form T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas features Charles Oliveira defending his lightweight belt against No. 1 contender Dustin Poirier.
It’s actually the challenger, Poirier, who is a -160 favourite to win on the MMA odds. Oliveira is a +125 underdog.
Charles Oliveira UFC 269 Odds
It took almost 11 years following his promotional debut, but Oliveira (31-8 MMA record) finally earned UFC gold when he claimed the vacant lightweight belt with a second-round TKO victory against Michael Chandler at UFC 262 in May. It was Oliveira’s ninth consecutive win and his 17th UFC finish, breaking the all-time record. Other UFC records to his name include most Performance of the Night bonuses (11) and most submissions (14).
Oliveira, who hasn’t lost since 2017, has only needed to go to decision once during his current nine-fight win streak. Along with his win against Chandler, the 32-year-old has picked up victories over notable names like Tony Ferguson (unanimous decision), Kevin Lee (submission) and Jared Gordon (KO).
“Do Bronx’s” biggest advantage in this fight is his ground game. Although his striking power and technique has improved in recent years, grappling is still what separates Oliveira. He averages 2.64 takedowns per 15 minutes with 44 per cent accuracy. That compares to 1.5 takedowns with 36 per cent accuracy for Poirier. Oliveira’s two-inch reach advantage should help him control the distance in the early stages of the fight, as Poirier likes to come out of the gate aggressive and fast.
Oliveira’s best strategy in this fight is to take things to the ground. He’s a high level grappler and his wrestling is far superior to Poirier’s. Oliveira has never fought past the third-round, so getting this fight to ground quickly is essential.
Dustin Poirier UFC 269 Odds
Poirier (28-6 MMA record) was reportedly offered a chance to fight for the vacant lightweight title, but turned it down to fight Conor McGregor for a second time in 2021 and third time overall. He beat “the Notorious” by second-round TKO in January, followed by a doctor’s stoppage in July as the first-round ended.
Now that the big paydays of the McGregor fights are behind him, Poirier is ready for another title shot. This is Poirier’s second title shot after a submission loss against Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 242 in September 2019. That was the 32-year-old’s last loss. Poirier has won his last three fights. He took down Dan Hooker by unanimous decision in 2020, followed by the two McGregor wins this year.
“The Diamond” is one of the top strikers the lightweight division has to offer. Poirier has proven he can still perform in the later rounds and his durability is top-notch. He lands 5.62 significant strikes per 15 minutes compared to 3.62 for Oliveira. Poirier is relentless, landing over 150 significant strikes in multiple fights, while Oliveira has only topped 50 significant strikes one time in the UFC.
Poirier needs to be patient in this fight. He’s at a reach disadvantage and if he can get this fight past the third round, his chances to win significantly increase. His best strategy is to wait and feel Oliveira out.
UFC 269 Prediction: Oliveira vs. Poirier
It’s rare to see the challenger favoured over the champion in a title fight, but in this case it’s warranted. Oliveira has strung together an impressive win streak, but the quality of opponent has been easier than what Poirier has faced and conquered over the last few years. Poirier wins this fight by fourth or fifth round KO/TKO.
