Georges St-Pierre to Announce MMA Return at UFC 186?
With rumors swirling about Georges St-Pierre returning to the Octagon, will he make it official in Montreal at UFC 186?
It just so happens that Georges St-Pierre and the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s No. 1 welterweight contender Rory MacDonald are scheduled to host the Q&A session before UFC 186 weigh-ins Friday afternoon in downtown Montreal.
GSP, who hasn’t fought in the UFC since vacating the welterweight belt in 2013, will stand in front of a throng of fans in his hometown and inevitably answer the first question: “Georges, when are you coming back to fight in the UFC?”
We all know that’s coming. What we don’t know is what St-Pierre’s answer will be.
Sports Interaction’s UFC 186 odds
During his hiatus, GSP refused to close the door on his MMA career and has been training regularly at Montreal’s legendary TriStar gym. He hasn’t shied away from the media either, stating that if he feels like returning to the UFC he will and if he doesn’t, well, who could blame him?
Still, if St-Pierre has decided to resume his fighting career, Friday afternoon in Montreal would be the perfect time to do so, wouldn’t it?
There’s enough talk about a GSP’s potential return to at least consider the idea that maybe this announcement has been planned for a while. Firstly, this UFC 186 card desperately needs something, anything, to give it a boost. Fighters have dropped like flies from this event and all due respect to Demetrius Johnson, but he’s headlining a card that probably wouldn’t even be a co-main event in the UFC’s next few big cards.
Secondly, the old saying that where there’s smoke, there’s fire comes into play. Earlier this week, GSP’s former manager Stephane Patry told The MMA Hour that he is convinced St-Pierre will fight again.
“Georges is going to come back for one fight,” Patry said. “I can’t say he’s going to come back and go on a title run and do 10 fights, but I know for sure he’s going to come back for one fight.”
And there’s more. Earlier this month after St-Pierre worked out with Freddie Roach, the legendary boxing trainer also had some insight into a possible GSP comeback.
“I trained him two days ago, before he went home,” Roach told reporters. “I said, ‘what do you think, are you going to fight again?’ He said ‘I’m getting the itch.'”
If all of that is true, GSP knows how to make it an event.
And if he does make that announcement Friday afternoon, wouldn’t it be just like Georges St-Pierre to swoop in and save this jinxed UFC 186 event in his hometown of Montreal without even stepping foot in the Octagon?
