The Yankees really have nothing to play for here. OK, they technically haven’t clinched the AL East title yet but it’s a formality (maybe tonight). New York is locked into the AL’s second seed (Houston is No. 1) and will get a first-round bye to the divisional series. Will the Yanks give sure-fire AL MVP Aaron Judge a rest at all down the stretch? It will be tough for Manager Aaron Boone to do so as Judge looks to add to his MLB-leading home-run total of 60 and potentially win the Triple Crown.
Toronto is looking to lock down the AL’s top Wild-Card spot and host a best-of-3 Wild-Card series. New York leads the season series 9-7 and is 4-2 at Rogers Centre. Judge has three homers and nine RBIs in the series but is hitting only .238. Gleyber Torres has five homers and 14 RBIs. Anthony Rizzo and Giancarlo Stanton have each gone yard three times. The Yanks have 22 homers in the 16 games.
George Springer is hitting .333 vs. the Yankees with three homers and eight RBIs. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had five homers (three in one game) and 10 RBIs. Matt Chapman, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Santiago Espinal are all hitting below .200 in the series.

The Yankees’ magic number to clinch the AL East is two games and thus could do it with a win tonight. They have won seven straight, although Aaron Judge hasn’t homered in the past five and remains one shy of Roger Maris’ AL record of 61. Judge says his parents will be in Toronto for the possible record. DH Giancarlo Stanton, third baseman Josh Donaldson (a former Blue Jay) and shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa were given Sunday night off but all should play here. It’s right-hander Luis Severino (6-3, 3.36 ERA) on the bump. He has made three starts against Toronto this year and is 1-0 with a 4.91 ERA. George Springer is just 3-for-22 career off him but does have two solo homers. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is 3-for-10 with a homer. The Yankees are 9-3 in the past 12 Monday games.
Toronto Blue Jays
George Springer hit two homers for Toronto in Sunday’s 7-1 win at Tampa Bay. Bo Bichette had another hit and has been one of the AL’s best players in September with a .402 average, seven homers and 25 RBIs. The Jays didn’t have to use closer Jordan Romano after doing so Saturday so he will be available tonight if needed. It’s right-hander Kevin Gausman (12-10, 3.32 ERA) on the mound. He has been significantly worse at home (4-7, 4.67 ERA) than away (8-3, 2.30). Gausman is 1-1 with a 1.42 ERA in two starts this year against the Yankees. Aaron Judge is 8-for-22 off him with three homers and two doubles. Giancarlo Stanton is 5-for-9 with a homer. The Blue Jays are 7-1 in their past eight series openers.
