Nothing brings ball clubs and bettors together better than a nice winning streak, but will the Blue Jays fly off-course again this year?
Blue Jays Rewarding Bettors
Yes, we’ve seen this before from Canada’s only team. Toronto goes on a winning streak that’s just long enough to get fans and bettors believing, begging the club to sneak into the playoffs for the first time since 1994. And then the wheels fall off.
Injuries, clubhouse squabbles, bad bullpens, and silenced bats have all broken Blue Jays fans’ hearts over the years. That’s why, when this team won both ends of a doubleheader at home against the Washington Nationals on June 2, nobody batted an eyelash. Now, the Blue Jays have everyone’s attention.
With Wednesday afternoon’s blowout win over Miami, the Jays have won eight straight games to pull two games over .500 and within striking distance of the AL East-leading New York Yankees as they head to Boston. The winning streak has dropped the Jays to +300 to win the division behind only the +240 Yankees.
”They’re a good hitting team and that group in the middle of the lineup is probably as good as any in baseball,” Miami manager Dan Jennings told reporters. ”They hunt the fastball and they’re certainly capable of doing damage when they get it.”
That’s an understatement. The Jays lead the league averaging better than 5.3 runs per game and sit among the top 5 in just about every significant offensive category despite some injury troubles.
Life On The Road
These have been happy days for Blue Jays bettors, riding this hot streak, but now is where the rubber really hits the road – literally. The Jays are only 11-18 away from the Rogers Centre and play three in Boston before a couple more in New York against the Mets. If they can get through this stretch without losing any ground on the Yankees, they’ll head back home to play 12 of their next 15 games.
The kicker here is the pitching staff. Toronto’s arms have struggled this year but the pitching staff has held its opponents to three or fewer runs seven times during this winning streak. If the Jays can keep from imploding on the mound, this team could have a real shot at the postseason.
Then again, Blue Jays bettors have been down this road before. Maybe it’s best to pass a few more exits on the highway before booking your playoff tickets.
