The Blue Jays make their lone visit to Detroit from July 7-9, right ahead of the All-Star break.
Toronto won five of seven in the series last year. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit .346 in the series with a homer. Matt Chapman was at .313 with four homers. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hit .360 but is now with Arizona. Tigers future Hall of Famer Miguel Cabrera had just one hit in 21 at-bats with four strikeouts. This is the final season for Cabrera, who will be a first-ballot entrant into Cooperstown. He’s hitting just .190 this year.
By the time the Tigers to make the trip to Toronto, Manager AJ Hinch may not still be with the team as his seat is very hot with the club off to a 2-7 record after hugely regressing last season. The Tigers are batting just .205 overall. Some of their recent very high draft picks either haven’t panned out yet or can’t stay healthy.
Detroit Tigers
The Tigers surprisingly won two of three at reigning World Series champion Houston early last week but otherwise were swept in their two series: At Tampa Bay and then this past weekend home vs. Boston. Over the weekend, the club put starting outfielder Austin Meadows on the 10-day injured list with anxiety. He was hitting .238 with two RBIs. Right-hander Matt Manning (1-0, 3.18 ERA) is scheduled on the mound Tuesday. The 25-year-old won in Houston in his season debut, allowing two runs and six hits over 5.2 innings. Manning’s lone start vs. Toronto was in 2021 when he allowed a run over six. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is 2-for-3 off him with a double. Detroit is 5-23 in its past 28 vs. the AL East.
Toronto Blue Jays
Perhaps a good thing the Jays were off on Monday as it might have been a huge letdown game if they played someone after rallying from down 6-0 on Sunday in Anaheim and beating the Angels 12-11 in 10 innings. Matt Chapman had five RBIs, including his first career grand slam. He is off to an AL MVP-calibre start. No. 9 batter Kevin Kiermaier, known for his defence, also had five RBIs. Closer Jordan Romano got the win despite allowing three runs in the ninth. The Jays won their final two series of the trip after losing the opening series in St. Louis. It’s ace right-hander Alek Manoah (1-0, 4.35) on the mound Tuesday. He was spectacular last Wednesday in Kansas City, shutting out the Royals over seven on one hit. Manoah is 0-1 with a 4.63 ERA in two career starts vs. Detroit. The Jays are 15-4 in their past 19 following an off day.
