Red Sox vs. Blue Jays Betting Analysis

Per usual, any players on opposing teams who aren’t vaccinated for COVID will not be allowed to travel across the border. When the Red Sox visited Toronto in late April, pitcher Tanner Houck wasn’t with the club. It wasn’t a huge deal then but it’s important now – he’s still not vaccinated – as Houck has taken over as the team’s closer. Another pitcher, Kutter Crawford, who is currently at Triple-A Worcester, was the only other player who was placed on the restricted list when the Red Sox last visited. It’s possible the Sox have added someone since then who might not be traveling (see below).

The Jays are 5-2 against the Red Sox this season, 3-1 at home.  Alejandro Kirk is batting .467 in the season series and, George Springer .333 with a homer and four RBIs. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. just .211 with two RBIs. Bo Bichette .207 but with a homer and seven RBIs. Xander Bogaerts is batting .500 with three RBIs in the series for Boston, and JD Martinez .353 with two RBIs. Trevor Story is hitting a scant .190 and Alex Verdugo .148. Amazingly, the Sox don’t have a single home run in 231 at-bats against Toronto pitching.

Boston Red Sox

In addition to Tanner Houck not traveling with the team, rookie outfielder Jarren Duran couldn’t make the trip because he’s not vaccinated. He has been excellent, hitting .327 with four steals from the leadoff role. The Sox enter on a seven-game winning streak. They turn to 26-year-old rookie Connor Seabold on the mound because of injuries in the rotation. He did pitch once in the majors last year, allowing two runs over three innings at the White Sox. At Triple-A this year, he had a 2.09 ERA in 11 starts. Seabold is ranked as Boston’s No. 11 overall prospect. The Sox are 16-5 in their past 21 road games.

Toronto Blue Jays

Outfielder and leadoff man George Springer returned from a three-game injury absence on Sunday in Milwaukee and was 1-for-4 with a run scored, but the Jays immediately blew a 3-0 lead after the top of the first and lost 10-3. Might be time to worry about Jose Berrios, but that’s a story for another day. Because he struggled so badly, Toronto did have to use four relievers Sunday, so that might come into play here. It’s Kevin Gausman (5-6, 3.19) scheduled to start. He has been hit or miss of late but was solid last time out, allowing two runs over six at the White Sox. Toronto has dropped his past four. Gausman has faced the Red Sox twice this season with one earned run allowed over 14 innings with no walks and 17 strikeouts. In 103.1 career innings against them, he’s 5-8 with a 4.01 ERA. Toronto is 2-5 in its past seven vs. teams with a winning record, but we like the pitching matchup here.
