Tampa Bay Rays vs. New York Yankees: Odds, Prediction
It’s Friday, and this evening, there’s a huge weekend series pitting the Tampa Bay Rays against the New York Yankees in the Bronx. Right now, the 33-15 Rays are 4.5 games ahead of the 30-21 Yankees, who have won just four of their last 13 games and are clearly backsliding a bit after a great start to the 2026 campaign. Can the Rays extend their AL East lead? Will the Yankees close the gap and get back to the top spot in the division?
Tonight’s game kicks off an exciting three-game series, so let’s break it all down and provide my Rays vs. Yankees best bet.
MLB Betting Analysis
Obviously, with Tampa on such a hot run right now at home, it falls under the radar that straight up, the Rays are 12-5 in their last 17 games on the road. Not just that, but Over has cashed in eight of the Rays’ last 12. For the Yankees, it’s the Over in four of the last seven games. But with Gerrit Cole on the mound and at home, it could be a different kind of vibe tonight.
Tampa Bay Rays
The Rays are one of the most punchless teams in baseball as a bottom-four team in home runs (41) entering play on Friday, but Tampa still is small-balling the heck out of opponents thanks to hitting a ton of singles and stealing a lot of bases. Only three squads have stolen more bases than Tampa, and no team across baseball has struck out less than the Rays have. All of this to say that the Rays are maximizing their plate appearances and pushing runs across. Their 304 singles tie the Pittsburgh Pirates for the league lead, and what has affectionately been called a “death by 1,000 cuts” offense has clearly led to success this season for Tampa Bay.
Tampa Bay has swept four teams at home as the best home team in baseball with a 19-5 record. After a year at Steinbrenner Field, it’s definitely felt nice for the Rays to get back to playing games at The Trop.
New York Yankees
The Yankees are on a big-time slide, but there is one giant reinforcement coming. Gerrit Cole makes his season debut tonight, and his return could spark a return to form for the Yankees. With Luis Gil sent to the minors and Max Fried hitting the IL, getting Carlos Rodon and Gerrit Cole back to pair with Cam Schlittler, Will Warren, and Ryan Weathers makes this rotation one of the best in the game.
We know the Yankees can get the ball out of the ballpark; their 73 home runs lead baseball through the season’s first 51 games. Pair that pitching with the third-best OPS (.760) in baseball, and this team going a putrid 4-9 in their last 13 games seems inconceivable. But that’s where we are with these Bronx Bombers, who either score 10 runs or none at all, like they did last night.
Who Will Win Rays vs. Yankees?
So who will win tonight’s first game of this series? Yankee Stadium will no doubt be rocking for Cole’s first start since Game 7 of the 2024 World Series. Cole might be amped up for this one, and that’s the momentum the Yankees haven’t had in the last couple of weeks.
Opposing Cole is Nick Martinez, who has the second-lowest ERA (1.51) in the American League and is a robust 4-1 this season. Martinez hasn’t given up more than one earned run in a start in over a month, but the journeyman with a career 4.01 ERA is certainly due.
For tonight’s game, we’ll go with Cole and the Yankees to take the first game of the series by a 2+ run margin in Yankee Stadium.
