Texas Rangers vs. Toronto Blue Jays: Odds, Prediction
Toronto is a short underdog on the MLB odds against two-time Cy Young winner Jacob deGrom.
Betting Analysis
Blue Jays fans might be confused for thinking their team got moved to the National League. We say that because Toronto just finished back-to-back series against the Colorado Rockies and Los Angeles Dodgers and then after this three-game set vs. the Texas Rangers of the AL West, the Jays play three games at the Pittsburgh Pirates and three at the Miami Marlins.
Toronto reaching the postseason now seems nearly a lock, it’s just a matter of whether the Jays do it as AL East champions and as which seed. One of the more unlikely World Series winners in recent years was Texas in 2023, the first title in franchise history. But the Rangers slipped to 78 wins last year. They are back in playoff contention in 2025 sitting at 61-61.
Texas won’t win the AL West but is only 3.5 games out of the final Wild-Card spot and +425 to reach the playoffs. Manager Bruce Bochy will be inducted into the Hall of Fame eventually. He’s sixth all-time in regular-season wins and has won four World Series titles career, the first three in San Francisco.
Toronto won two of three in Arlington in late May – there were only seven total runs scored in the series with the winning team finishing at two runs in all three. The Blue Jays swept a home three-game set vs. the Rangers in 2024.
Texas Rangers
Texas is back to .500 after losing for the sixth time in seven games (all at home) on Wednesday to Arizona. The offence has largely gone silent in this stretch. Early this week, the team put starting outfielder Adolis Garcia, the 2023 ALCS MVP, on the injured list with a sprained ankle and activated outfielder Evan Carter. Top setup man Chris Martin is also on the IL, while good-looking rookie outfielder Wyatt Langford is day-to-day with forearm tightness. One major issue with the team this year has been the bullpen. Texas blew its 23rd save opportunity Wednesday in a brutal loss to Arizona. Those are the second-most blown saves in the AL.
Future Hall of Famer and two-time NL Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom (10-5, 2.86 ERA) starts on the mound tonight. The 37-year-old is finally healthy but also might be wearing down after so many injury-shortened seasons as deGrom has lost three straight starts, allowing 13 runs over 19 innings. He’s still striking out guys, though, with 21 over that stretch. DeGrom lost at home to the Blue Jays on May 26, allowing two earned over 5.1 innings. He didn’t have a single strikeout, the first time in his 229 career games at the time that he didn’t have at least one. He’s set at over-under 5.5 Ks tonight. The Jays’ Daulton Varsho has had success against him with a double and solo homer in four at-bats.
Toronto Blue Jays
The Jays won Thursday’s home series finale against the Cubs, 2-1, to take two of three. Down by a run, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the seventh to give Max Scherzer a deserved victory. Jeff Hoffman got the save and may or may not be available tonight after also throwing an inning on Tuesday. But with only 26 combined pitches between those two games, he probably will be available if necessary. Outfielder George Springer has cleared concussion protocol and started a rehab assignment with Triple-A Buffalo on Thursday.
Veteran righty Chris Bassitt (11-6, 4.17 ERA) starts for Toronto on the mound, and he was a former teammate of Rangers starter Jacob deGrom with the Mets in 2022. Bassitt, who missed the Rangers earlier in the year, was not sharp last time out at the Dodgers but has been amazing at Rogers Centre in 2025 at 8-0 with a 2.56 ERA. Former Blue Jay Marcus Semien is 1-for-11 career off him. Corey Seager is 3-for-9 with two doubles. Toronto is 14-3 in its past 17 vs. AL West foes.
