The New York Mets will continue a seven-game road trip when they begin a four-game series against the San Francisco Giants on Thursday night.

It has been an unspectacular start at best for both ballclubs in 2026. New York is 3-3 and dropped the last two games of its most recent series at St. Louis. San Francisco comes in with a 2-4 record, including 0-3 at home after scoring a grand total of one run while getting swept by the visiting Yankees to begin the year.

These two National League rivals squared off six times last season, with the Mets winning on four occasions – including all three in San Francisco in late July.

New York is a -120 favourite to win on the MLB odds, with the total set at 7.5.

Betting Analysis

In addition to being 4-2 straight up against San Francisco in 2025, New York was also 4-2 on the run line. The over was 3-2-1 in six head-to-head encounters last year after completely blowing away the total in the final two meetings. The two teams combined for 34 runs on August 2 and August 3.

New York Mets

The Mets’ bats have been ice cold so far. They shockingly scored 11 runs on Opening Day in a game started by Pirates ace Paul Skenes, but that was largely thanks to a disastrous defensive effort by Pittsburgh. Since then, New York has crossed the plate a grand total of 12 times in the span of five contests. Juan Soto is 9-for-26 (.346) with a home run and five RBIs, but newcomer Bo Bichette is 3-for-27 (.111) with zero extra-base hits and eight strikeouts.

Fortunately for New York, David Peterson may not require a ton of run support. The 30-year-old hurled 5.1 innings of scoreless baseball in his 2026 debut, a 4-2 victory over Pittsburgh this past Saturday. Peterson is going on just four days of rest, but that should not matter since he threw only 76 pitches last weekend. The southpaw made two appearances against San Francisco last year and gave up just three runs in 12.0 innings of work.

San Francisco Giants

San Francisco is coming off a 7-1 loss at San Diego on Wednesday, and unfortunately that is nothing new for first-year manager Tony Vitello’s squad. It got shut out twice by the Yankees and then scored just one run in the series finale. That’s right; one run in three games. The Giants at least managed to plate 12 in a pair of wins over the Padres prior to Wednesday’s setback. Rafael Devers is 5-for-22 (.227) with only one extra-base hit (a double) and six strikeouts.

The Giants are countering with Robbie Ray, who limited the Yankees to two runs on five hits and no walks while striking out four batters in 5.1 innings. In 12.2 innings against the Mets last season, the 34-year-old lefty surrendered just three runs on nine hits.

MLB Prediction: Who Will Win Mets vs. Giants?

Both pitchers are in fine form and fared well against their respective opponents in 2025. The under is 5-1 for the Mets this season and 5-0 in their last five games. It is 3-1-1 in the Giants’ past five outings. Another low-scoring affair could be in the cards given the pitching matchup and the cold offences. Although it’s not saying a lot, Soto and the rest of New York’s lineup is slightly more reliable than San Francisco’s at the moment. Let’s go with the Mets to win 3-2.
