New York Mets vs. Los Angeles Dodgers: Odds, Prediction
After 20 innings, the New York Mets finally scored a run. And then they proceeded to get blanked for the next nine again.
The offensively-challenged Mets have lost seven straight and sit in the National League East cellar, and yet they have to face the two-time defending World Champion Los Angeles Dodgers and four-time MVP Shohei Ohtani one more time Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET.
Francisco Lindor homered three pitches into Tuesday night’s 2-1 loss to the Dodgers, who are now 8-3 at home. Lindor had two hits, but the rest of his teammates combined added just two more, and the team was held without another run.
New York has been outscored 36-10 during its losing streak.
Kyle Tucker had a game-winning RBI single in the eighth inning, and Freddie Freeman had an RBI groundout in the bottom of the first, but the Dodgers only had three hits as starters Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Nolan McLean were dealing all night.
Betting Analysis
With Ohtani (1-0, 0.00 ERA) on the mound, the streaking Dodgers are heavy favourites with a -220 moneyline on the MLB odds. The Mets’ moneyline sits at +180.
The runline is set at Dodgers -1.5 (-105) in a series that has produced a combined seven runs in two games. The over/under total is 8.0 runs, with the under slightly favoured at -115.
New York Mets
New York’s offence is stuck in the mud right now. Its team batting average of .225 is the second-worst in the National League. Its 63 runs scored are the third-worst.
It doesn’t help that six-time Silver Slugger and four-time All-Star Juan Soto is currently on the IL and not due back until next week.
Soto was hitting .355 with a homer and five RBIs in eight games before exiting early in a 10-4 win over the San Francisco Giants on April 4 with calf tightness.
Outfielder Jared Young (.350) is day-to-day right now. Reliever Joey Gerber, who allowed two hits and struck out five in two innings of relief work against the Dodgers on Monday, is now on the IL.
Los Angeles Dodgers
Conversely, the Dodgers’ .281 batting average is the best in MLB. Ohtani has now reached base safely in a career-high 48 straight games. He’s hitting .271 with five home runs and 10 RBIs in April, but it’s his arm that will get the most attention Wednesday with his third start on the hill.
Ohtani has gone six innings in both starts this season, allowing a total of five hits and one unearned run in a win over Cleveland and a no-decision against Toronto.
Eight-time All-Star, seven-time Silver Slugger, and six-time Gold Glove winner Mookie Betts (.179, two home runs) continues to be sidelined by a right oblique injury.
MLB Prediction: Who Will Win Mets vs. Dodgers?
An Ohtani who’s dealing on the mound against a Mets offence that has struggled to produce against lesser hurlers does not bode well for New York’s chances of ending this losing streak.
The Mets counter with Clay Holmes, who is 2-1 with a 1.50 ERA, 12 K’s, and a 1.11 WHIP in three starts this season. He’s given up two runs or less in each of his three starts, so I wouldn’t look for an offensive explosion yet again this evening.
We’ll throw the Mets a bone and give them a run, but take the Dodgers to win 3-1.
