The Padres enter this matchup just a few games over .500, and are currently in third place in the NL West by a wide margin. More pressing, the Padres are very much in the race for a National League Wild Card spot, sitting just a few games behind the Philadelphia Phillies for the third and final spot.
Even with the loss to the Giants on Thursday night, the Padres are still 6-4 in their last 10 games. That said, they have not played their best against the Giants this season, having gone 3-4 against them in the seven meetings thus far.
MLB Prediction: Who Will Win Giants vs. Padres?
For this game, I will be looking for the Giants to continue playing the Padres well after beating them in Game 1 of this series on Thursday night.
Their starter, Whisenhunt, may have limited starts this season, but as previously mentioned, he was solid when pitching on the road. Facing the Padres’ lineup may be a more difficult challenge; however, this is a San Diego offence that ranks 24th in the league in terms of runs per game, and has been extremely inconsistent this season.
Add in the fact that the Padres have struggled against the Giants this season, and backing the San Francisco Giants +1.5 (-178) will be our best bet, while I do also predict them to secure a 5-4 upset win.
