One of the marquee series of the MLB regular season starts Monday night as the Toronto Blue Jays host the Los Angeles Dodgers in a rematch of last year’s epic World Series. The Dodgers are -140 favourites for the opener with a total of 8.5 runs on the MLB odds.

Of course the last time these teams played was the incredible Game 7 of the 2025 World Series when the Dodgers won a truly legendary game, 5-4 in 11 innings, to repeat as champions. That entire series was arguably the most exciting Fall Classic since at least 2016 when the Cubs finally ended their title drought with a memorable Game 7 win in Cleveland.
If there is no 2027 MLB season, blame the Dodgers. Other owners around the sport were outraged that the rich were able to get richer in the off-season when L.A. won the bidding for the top free agent on the market in Kyle Tucker at $60 million (U.S.) per season. It is absolutely expected that the owners will lock out the players after this season when the CBA expires in December. Owners say they are more resolute than ever to get a salary cap with the anger at the Dodgers’ wild spending a key point.
But nothing can be done about that in 2026 and Los Angeles is the clear +200 favourite to three-peat as World Series champion, which no team has done since the Yankees in 2000. Don’t expect the Dodgers to push for a record regular-season win total or anything as they last time they really went all-out through the end was in 2022 when they won 111 games but then stunned in the NLDS.

Los Angeles Dodgers
Originally, it appeared that dual-threat superstar Shohei Ohtani, a four-time MVP (three in a row in the National League), would be on the mound for Monday’s opener but now that should be Wednesday. The team wants to be careful in getting him as much rest as possible in between starts on the mound since he plays every day as the DH.
It’s scheduled to be lefty Justin Wrobleski on the hill tonight. He has spent most of his three-season career as a reliever but was in a competition for a rotation spot this spring and didn’t win it. The 25-year-old pitched in relief in his 2026 debut, allowing three runs and four hits over four innings of a no-decision vs. Cleveland. Wrobleski saw relief action in four games of the 2025 World Series vs. Toronto and didn’t allow a run with four hits over five innings, not getting a decision in any.
L.A. is without former AL MVP and shortstop Mookie Betts as he was placed on injured reserve Sunday with a right oblique strain after leaving Saturday’s game at Washington early. Betts was only hitting .179 but has two homers and seven RBIs. Hyeseong Kim and Miguel Rojas likely split time at short while Betts is unavailable.
Toronto Blue Jays
The Jays might have been looking ahead to this series over the weekend when they were swept three games at the lousy White Sox and have dropped four in a row overall. Catcher Alejandro Kirk was placed on the injured list Saturday with a left thumb fracture. Tyler Heineman takes over as the No. 1. Outfielder Addison Barger left Sunday’s loss with ankle trouble and manager John Schneider said he might need a day or two.
Future Hall of Famer Max Scherzer is on the mound Monday as the 41-year-old righty faces one of his former teams. He made 11 regular-season starts for the Dodgers in 2021 after being traded from Washington. Scherzer looked excellent in his 2026 debut, allowing one run and four hits over six innings in a home win over Colorado. In 19 career appearances vs. L.A. (17 starts), he’s 5-6 despite a sterling 2.38 ERA. Shohei Ohtani is 5-for-10 career off him with two doubles and a homer. Another former league MVP in Freddie Freeman hits only .207 vs. Scherzer with 17 strikeouts in 58 at-bats.
