The Blue Jays return to New York on Tuesday to open a two-game series against the AL East-leading New York Yankees, who are -145 favourites to win the opener on the MLB odds.

Betting Analysis

Minor advantage for the Blue Jays in that they were off on Monday while the Yankees had to play a home makeup game vs. Texas, although it was a matinee. New York won 1-0.

New York leads the season series vs. Toronto 4-3 and the teams split four in the Bronx from April 11-14. Teoscar Hernandez has played in just three of the seven but leads Toronto with a .364 average in the series. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is batting .296 with three homers (all on April 13) and five RBIs. George Springer is at .276 with a homer and four knocked in. Matt Chapman, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Santiago Espinal are all at .200 or worse.

Aaron Hicks leads Yankees regulars in the series with a .316 average and has a homer with three RBIs. DJ LeMahieu is at .304 with two doubles. Gleyber Torres and Aaron Judge each have two homers and four RBIs. Giancarlo Stanton, Anthony Rizzo and former Blue Jay Josh Donaldson are all batting .167 or worse vs. Toronto.

The Jays have won nine of their past 12 at the Yankees.

Toronto Blue Jays

Because Toronto was off Monday, the team should have its full bullpen for Tuesday. After losing three of four in Cleveland over the weekend, probably a good thing to get a day of rest overall. The Jays finished a stretch of 20 games in 20 days Sunday. Hernandez was 1-for-7 in the series with two RBIs and four strikeouts after being activated off the injured list Saturday. Overall in the series, the Jays hit .421 in the first inning but .171 from the second inning on.

Lefty Yusei Kikuchi (1-1, 4.35) is set to start on the mound Tuesday. He beat New York last Wednesday, allowing a run and three hits over six innings in easily his best outing with the Jays. Yankees batters swung and missed 15 times against Kikuchi, the most swings and misses he’s generated in a start this year.

“If he throws strikes, he’s going to get people out,” Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo said.

Torres is 6-for-13 career off Kikuchi and LeMahieu 6-for-14. Toronto is 1-4 in its past five on the road.

New York Yankees

The Yankees are in a stretch of playing 23 games in 22 straight days. Their eight comeback wins this season are tied for the second-most in the majors. New York has lost back-to-back games only once. It’s the sixth time since 1959 that the Yankees have won at least 20 of their first 28 games of a season.

It’s hard-throwing right-hander Luis Severino (2-0, 3.75) on the mound Tuesday. He missed the Jays in Toronto but beat them in the Bronx on April 14, allowing no runs and two hits over five. Severino hasn’t been great in his past two starts, allowing four runs in each – although New York won both. Springer has seen him the most of any Blue Jays batter, but is 1-for-16 with seven Ks. Hernandez is the lone Toronto player with a homer off Severino. The Yankees are 13-3 in their past 16 as favourites.
