The Toronto Blue Jays open a six-game road trip through the AL East on Tuesday night by visiting division-leading Tampa Bay. The Rays are -130 favourites on the MLB odds with a total of 7.5.

Tuesday marks the start of the third-to-last road trip of the season for Toronto and while it faces an uphill climb to return to the postseason, it will at least have a say in which AL teams do. There absolutely, positively will be a lockout this winter and the 2027 MLB season is definitely in jeopardy because owners want a salary cap and the players’ union is adamantly opposed.
The Rays are proof that you don’t have to be a big-market team to consistently succeed as Tampa Bay dries flies at their awful Tropicana Field stadium and annually have one of the lowest payrolls in the majors. The 2026 Rays have a commanding lead atop the AL East and are neck-and-neck with Milwaukee, Atlanta and the LA Dodgers for the best overall record in the majors and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.
Tampa Bay is one of five franchises to never win a World Series along with Seattle, San Diego, Milwaukee and Colorado, but the Rays have enough to finally break through this season. They are -475 to win the AL East and +360 second-favourites for the pennant.
The Rays lead the season series 8-2, including 3-0 at home, and this set concludes it. Blue Jays batters are hitting just .206 vs. Tampa Bay pitching. Toronto rookie third baseman Kazuma Okamoto is having a fine year but is just 5-for-32 with 13 strikeouts in the series.

The Blue Jays have looked much better of late in winning series’ over expected playoff teams in the Phillies (in Philadelphia), Red Sox and Yankees (last week at Rogers Centre). Things are not over yet regarding the playoffs only a half-game out of the final AL wild card spot.
Star Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who amazingly still hasn’t homered at home in 2026, hasn’t played since Friday as he landed on the seven-day concussion IL. He will thus miss this series, a nice break for the Rays. As it is, only Seattle has scored fewer runs than the Blue Jays (492) across MLB.
Trade deadline acquisition Jose Soriano (9-6, 3.16 ERA in 24 starts overall this year) makes third start for Toronto since coming over from the Angels. He allowed one earned in each of the first two but didn’t get a decision in either. He faced the Rays on June 13 in Anaheim and shut them out over five in a victory. No active Tampa Bay batter has homered against him.

The Rays are usually one of the best teams at home in the majors, but they were nearly swept in a four-game series over the weekend and into Monday at Tropicana Field by Baltimore. But Tampa Bay escaped the finale on Monday, 7-6.
One piece of good news there for Toronto is that stellar Tampa Bay closer Bryan Baker had a five-out save, so he’s probably not available here.
Maybe the biggest starting pitching good surprise in the majors this season has been Rays 36-year-old journeyman Nick Martinez at 12-3 with a 2.74 ERA and named a first-time All-Star – the wins are a career high.
Last time out, Martinez threw the first nine-inning complete game in his career in a win at Sacramento; he had an eight-inning complete game in 2024 and lost it. Martinez’s home ERA of 3.31 is more than a run higher than his road number (2.14), which is a bit unusual. He is 2-0 with a 1.64 ERA in two starts this year against Toronto. George Springer has had nice career success off him at 8-for-19 with two homers and four walks.
