Hyun Jin Ryu’s Importance to the Toronto Blue Jays
After discussing Paul DeJong’s disappointing pit stop in Toronto, David Bastl and John Gibbons shift to a more positive storyline. Pitcher Hyun Jin Ryu has been strong since returning from a long-term injury. In 19 innings of work, he’s struck out 15 batters, gone 2-1, and has a mesmerizing ERA of 1.05.
What paved the way for such a successful return to action for Hyun and how important is his presence in the rotation? Gibbons shares his thoughts.
“Obviously, it’s been huge, especially with Alek Manoah’s struggles. These guys come back better than ever after that surgery now. He’s got a different style, he’s a command pitcher. He keeps you off balance.”
Regarding the operation “Gibby” refers to, Hyun Jin Ryu had Tommy John surgery in 2022. It kept him out of action for the remainder of that season and the first few months of the current 2023 campaign. He took to the mound for the first time on August 1 against the Baltimore Orioles.
