Quarterfinal paths
Here’s how the standings look for Group A as of Tuesday afternoon:
| Team | Record |
|---|---|
| Puerto Rico | 3-0 |
| Cuba | 2-1 |
| Canada | 1-1 |
| Colombia | 1-3 |
| Panama | 1-3 |
Colombia and Panama have both been eliminated after finishing group play with matching 1-3 records. Panama lost against Colombia, so they will finish last in the group and need to requalify for the next WBC.
Group A host Puerto Rico has already clinched a spot in the quarterfinals with a 3-0 start and they will win the group with a win over Canada. You can see our complete Canada vs. Puerto Rico game preview and score prediction here.
Canada’s schedule is an advantage in a way because they enter Tuesday as the only team that hasn’t played at least three games, so they know the two distinct paths to clinching a quarterfinal berth.
The most straightforward path for Canada to qualify for the quarterfinals is to beat Puerto Rico and Cuba. That would give them top spot in Group A and they would face the runner-up of Group B in the quarters.
If Canada loses to Puerto Rico, they can still finish second in the group by beating Cuba. That would mean Canada and Cuba finish with identical 2-2 records and the Canadians would hold the head-to-head tiebreaker. Canada would then face the winner of Group B in the quarterfinals.
