The AL MVP will likely come down to the Blue Jays' Vladimir Guerrero Jr. or the Angels' Shoehei Ohtani, but they'll be putting that rivalry aside for one game as they team up for the MLB All-Star Game on Tuesday.
Three Toronto Blue Jays are in the starting lineup for the American League on Tuesday night in the 2021 Major League Baseball All-Star Game from Coors Field in Denver. The National League, which is the home team, is the slight favourite on the MLB odds.
2021 MLB All-Star Game Betting Odds and Analysis
The managers for the All-Star Game each year are the previous season’s World Series managers. That brings up the Tampa Bay Rays’ Kevin Cash for the American League, which has won this game seven years in a row. He’ll face the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Dave Roberts for the National League, who is managing in the All-Star game for the third time.
It’s an unusually high total of 11 runs because the game is being held in the thin air of Denver. The only All-Star Game in the past decade where at least 11 runs were scored was in 2018 when the AL won 8-6 in Washington, D.C. The last NL victory was 8-0 in 2012 in Kansas City. There was no All-Star Game last year due to COVID/shortened season.
Manager Kevin Cash gave MLB fans what they wanted by not only naming Los Angeles Angels star Shohei Ohtani his starting pitcher but also the leadoff hitter. Pitchers don’t hit in the Midsummer Classic so he will “switch” from DH to pitcher in the bottom of the first inning. Ohtani leads the majors with 33 homers. Batting second and playing first base is Jays star Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who is second in MLB with 28 homers and leads with 73 RBIs and a .332 batting average. The AL MVP is almost surely going to come down to either Ohtani or Guerrero.
The rest of the AL starting lineup and batting order is Red Sox SS Xander Bogaerts, Yankees RF Aaron Judge, Red Sox 3B Rafael Devers, Jays 2B Marcus Semien, Royals C Salvador Perez, Jays LF Teoscar Hernandez and Orioles CF Cedric Mullins (for the injured Mike Trout). Every team is supposed to have at least one All-Star, but the Houston Astros don’t have any. They did have four but all of them pulled out of the game.
Three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer of the Nationals was chosen as the starting pitcher by National League manager Dave Roberts of the Dodgers. It’s the eighth straight time in this game for Scherzer and his fourth time starting. He was the winning pitcher in 2014 for the AL, while with the Detroit Tigers. Starting pitchers often only go one inning and no more than two.
The starting lineup and batting order for the Senior Circuit is Padres SS Fernando Tatis Jr., Dodgers DH Max Muncy, Cardinals 3B Nolan Arenado, Braves 1B Freddie Freeman, Reds RF Nick Castellanos, Reds LF Jesse Winker, Phillies C JT Realmuto (for the injured Buster Posey), Pirates CF Bryan Reynolds (for the injured Ronald Acuna Jr.) and Pirates 2B Adam Frazier.
