New to watching WNBA? This is how their playoffs work:
After the regular season, the top eight teams, regardless of conference, advance to the playoffs. The teams are seeded 1 through 8 based on their regular-season record, with tiebreakers determined by head-to-head performance and other statistical factors like point differential.
The playoffs are divided into three rounds: the first round, semifinals, and finals. In the first round, matchups are a best-of-three series, where the higher-seeded team hosts the first two games, while the lower seed hosts Game 3, if necessary. As in most playoff formats, the higher seed has a clear advantage, as two of the three games are played on their home court.
After the first round, the semifinals begin, where the format shifts to a best-of-five series. In this round, the higher seed hosts Games 1, 2, and 5 (if necessary), giving them a significant home-court advantage. Similarly, the WNBA Finals are also a best-of-five series, with the higher-seeded team hosting the same three games.
The WNBA uses a straightforward tiebreaker system to seed teams. If two teams are tied, the first tiebreaker is the head-to-head record between the two. If that doesn’t resolve the tie, the next criterion is the better record against teams over .500, followed by point differential in head-to-head games.
