Tiger Woods has a New Nike Commercial and a New Headache

The media circus surrounding Tiger Woods continues to gather momentum as the his returns comes ever closer. In the space of 24 hours a new commercial with Nike has been released as have reports of yet another affair.

Return of the corporate phenomenon
The return of Tiger Woods to the Golf course means sponsors can once again look at marketing the Tiger brand. There’s no room for aggressive fist-bumping or any kind of fun antics yet however, it’s too soon for the corporate world to even consider exploiting those angles. Instead Nike has opted for a more solemn and simple effort with this offering which will air during the Masters.

Shooting the ad in black and white adds an air of class to the piece and de-emphasises the excitement of watching Tiger Woods in action. Instead we hear the voice of the late Earl Woods saying the kind of words that could easily be associated with matters not entirely related to Tiger’s Golf game. There are certainly questions to be asked regarding how tasteful it is to use the voice of a deceased person to infer such a context but Nike handles it in about as respectful and classy a manner as possible. If nothing else Nike has found a safe way to attach itself to the Tiger-hype that is in full-swing this week, a machine that is fuelling a wave of golf betting action on Woods in Augusta.

Yet another distraction
Just when we thought we’d heard all we’d ever want to know about Tiger’s sordid off-course activity, and no doubt plenty we didn’t want to hear, rumours of yet another reported mistress have surfaced. The National Enquirer, which first broke the story of Tiger’s affairs, is reporting yet more off-course activity and this time it was allegedly with his neighbour’s daughter. A source told the Enquirer that Woods seduced Raychel Coudriet last year, when she was 21, having known the girl since she was 14 years old.

The source told the Enquirer that Coudriet “felt ashamed”. The source went on to claim that Tiger sent salacious text messages to Coudriet but “despite all the badgering from the four-time Masters champion for the next four months she refused to hook up with him”. Even if there is no substance to these claims news like this leaking just before Tiger tees off in his comeback, especially when this story hits so literally close to home.
