How well do Brady and Manning know their way around a golf course? We're about to find out in Sunday's COVID-19 charity event with Tiger and Phil.

Sunday’s “The Match: Champions for Charity” golf event in Florida on Sunday will feature four of the biggest American sports stars ever in their respective sports, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson in golf and Tom Brady and Peyton Manning in pro football, facing off in a team exhibition made-for-TV 18-hole match play to benefit COVID-19 relief. It will begin at 3 p.m. ET.

Tiger Woods, Peyton Manning vs. Phil Mickelson, Tom Brady

Woods and Mickelson remain by far the two most popular American golfers and have been for many years. They have combined for 20 major championships. Their relationship wasn’t always great, but the two legends have become friendly. Age will do that.

The same goes relationship-wise for arguably the two best NFL quarterback ever in Brady and Manning. They have combined for eight Super Bowl titles and eight NFL MVP Awards. They weren’t always close as mega-competitors but are friendly now that Manning is retired; Brady, of course, left the New England Patriots this NFL off-season in a surprise for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Sunday’s “The Match: Champions for Charity” at Medalist Golf Club in Hobe Sound, Fla., features Woods and Manning facing Mickelson and Brady, with WarnerMedia (holds TV & streaming rights) and the four players making a donation of $10 million to benefit COVID-19 relief. There will also be on-course challenges to raise additional charitable funds. And, for sure, there will be plenty of side betting action between the very wealthy players as well.

There will be even more trash-talking. All players will wear microphones, and ride their own carts for social distancing. There will be no caddies or fans in attendance.

Needless to say, there had to be a format where Manning and Brady wouldn’t embarrass themselves, although both are good golfers and participate in numerous celebrity tournaments, pro-ams, etc. Manning plays to a reported 6.4 handicap and Brady 8.1

The format features team match play with best ball on the front nine and a modified alternate shot on the back nine, where each participant tees off and then each team plays alternate shot from whichever is the most advantageous drive.

Interestingly, the event will include a one-club challenge on the fifth hole. That means every player can use just a single club on the entire hole – even to putt. Guys always use a mid-iron for various reasons (try to hit a wood out of the sand!).

The Match II: Tiger vs. Phil At Medalist Golf Club

Medalist is one of Florida’s best courses about 15 miles from Palm Beach and also happens to be Tiger’s home track these days. World Golf Hall of Famer Greg Norman founded Medalist Golf Club in 1995 and it was the first-ever design collaboration between Norman and legendary course guru Pete Dye.

While Tiger may have home-course advantage, he hasn’t played a competitive event since shooting a final-round 77 at Genesis Invitational on Feb. 16 in California to finish dead last in the tournament. Woods hadn’t been playing due to some back issues and then of course the coronavirus shutting down the PGA Tour.

Tiger vs. Phil II: Golf Betting Odds

The Match: Champions for Charity

  • Tiger Woods/Peyton Manning -213
  • Phil Mickelson/Tom Brady +154

Woods/Manning are the -191 favourites on the golf odds board with Mickelson/Brady at +144. Tiger was the favourite over Lefty two years ago in Las Vegas in their first event like this, but Mickelson won in 22 holes after the duo finished tied following 18.

Sports Interaction has some interesting props. That a playoff decides the winner again is +225, with no at -333. Will anyone have an ace? Yes is +900 and no -10000.

Will all four players wear shorts? Yes is a -167 favourite. If you have ever been in Florida this time of year, well, you know why yes is favoured. High temperatures for that area Sunday are projected to be mid-80s with 70 per cent humidity. Players can’t wear shorts in PGA Tour events, but this isn’t one of those.

The Match: Champions for Charity

Specials - Most Birdies
  • Tiger Woods -125
  • Phil Mickelson -111

There are also golf odds on each player to birdie the first hole: Tiger is +400, Mickelson +485, and Manning and Brady both +900. The first hole at Medalist is a par-4 measuring around 400 yards from the championship tees and considered one of the easier holes on the course. Manning is -133 to outdrive Brady (-105) on the first hole.

Medalist usually plays to a par 72 at 7,177 yards, but there could be alterations made for Sunday. There are closest to the pin prop options on all four players at a handful of other holes.

The Match: Champions of Charity Prediction

Tiger and Manning win – Woods is frankly better than Mickelson, and Manning by handicap is a bit better than Brady. Tiger no doubt will want payback for that 2018 loss to Lefty. And home-course advantage does matter in Woods’ favour.
