DeChambeau and Rodgers are -169 favourites on the golf odds with Mickelson/Brady at +121.

The tournament takes place at the incredibly picturesque The Reserve at Moonlight Basin in Big Sky, Montana. The Reserve is an absolute monster of a track at nearly 8,000 yards, but the ball is going to fly because it’s at 7,500 feet of elevation. The 17^th hole is a par 5 at an absurd 777 yards. The format is modified alternate-shot match play. The team with the lowest number of combined strokes will win the hole; holes also can be halved. Players will once again wear microphones so we will get to hear all the trash talk, etc.

DeChambeau is one of the biggest hitters on the PGA Tour – leads in average driving distance of 321.9 yards — so in theory that would seem to be to his benefit. However, he might not be in a great mental place right now. He just split with his caddie Tim Tucker and missed the cut at the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit over the weekend (won the 2020 tournament). DeChambeau acted like a spoiled brat after each of his rounds by refusing to speak to the media even though he is literally sponsored by Rocket Mortgage. That could not have made company officials happy.

Mickelson also was in a bad mood over the weekend at the tournament because the Detroit News published a story about how a bookie had allegedly cheated Mickelson out of $500,000 many years ago. Lefty was so perturbed by the “old news” that he threatened to never play in Detroit again, although he walked that back a bit.

The first Match was between Mickelson and Tiger Woods in 2018 in Las Vegas and Lefty won that in extra holes (22 overall). The next Match was in May 2020 in Florida in the midst of the pandemic and did huge numbers both from a TV and betting perspective because there was simply nothing else going on sports-wise. Woods and Peyton Manning beat Mickelson and Brady 1 up.

The third Match was in November of last year in Arizona with Mickelson and basketball Hall of Famer Charles Barkley, who is frankly not a good golfer, beating Manning and NBA star Steph Curry 4 and 3 in an upset.

Of course, Brady is the quarterback of the defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers and has won a record seven Super Bowls. Brady’s official handicap index had been listed at 8.1.

“I don’t think Brady’s an 8. I’ve played with him, and he’s good,” Rodgers said in a Golf Digest interview.

Rodgers is the quarterback of the Green Bay Packers who won his third NFL regular-season MVP Award in the 2020 season – Brady has won three as well. Rodgers, whose best handicap is reportedly 3.5, lost to Brady and the Bucs in the NFC title game.

Rodgers had been adamant he wants out of Green Bay, but the Packers say they will never trade him and most believe Rodgers will end up showing up to training camp later this month. His only real leverage would be to “retire.” Rodgers could have opted out of the 2021 NFL season and still kept more than $18 million, but he didn’t choose that nuclear option by last Friday’s deadline to opt out.
