There are a couple of “silly season” events after this before 2023, and we’ll surely preview the Hero World Challenge from Dec. 1-4 from the Bahamas because Tiger Woods is playing in his own event.

A handful of PGA Tour pros live on St. Simons Island in Georgia (about 200 miles south of Augusta, home of the Masters) and the Sea Island Golf Club is the host, with players competing on both the par-70, 7,005-yard Seaside course and the par-72, 7,060-yard Plantation course. They co-host the first two rounds and then the Seaside course handles the weekend.

It’s a pretty good field but one player missing is last year’s champion Talor Gooch, who jumped to LIV Golf and is under suspension by the PGA Tour. Gooch ran off three birdies in four holes to start the back nine and shot a final-round 6-under 64 to finish at 22-under 260 and three shots ahead of Canadian Mackenzie Hughes.

Gooch was the sixth consecutive 36-hole leader/co-leader to win the RSM Classic and the sixth of the past seven 54-hole leaders/co-leaders to win it. That remains Gooch’s lone PGA Tour win – he was the seventh player in the 12 years of the event to make the RSM Classic his first career victory — and he clearly won’t be getting another anytime soon. It was the first time since 2017 that the tournament didn’t go to a playoff. The 2018 champion, Charles Howell III, is also a LIV member.

Americans have won this tournament every year but once.

Tony Finau won the Houston Open on Sunday, his third victory in his past seven Tour starts and fifth career. He’s the +900 favourite. “I’m putting it better than I’ve ever putted it, more consistently and I know that’s the part of my game I’ve always needed to be better at, so that on the technical side, for sure,” he said. Finau hasn’t played this event since 2014 when he was T14.

Brian Harman is +2200 with Jason Day, Seamus Power and Taylor Montgomery each +2500. Harman’s best finish here is T4 in 2017.  Day missed the cut last year. Power was T4 in 2021 and recently won in Bermuda. Montgomery makes his event debut.

The lone non-American winner here was Canada’s Mackenzie Hughes in 2016 when he beat Blayne Barber, Billy Horschel, Henrik Norlander and Camilo Villegas in a playoff for his first PGA Tour victory. Hughes earlier this season added win No. 2 at the Sanderson Farms Championship. As noted, Hughes was second here last year. Corey Conners was T22, Taylor Pendrith T26, Michael Gligic T29, Adam Hadwin T51, Roger Sloan T61. Adam Svensson and David Hearn missed the cut.

Hughes is +4000 this week with Pendrith +5000, Svensson +12500 and Gligic +25000

The RSM Classic Golf Predictions

We like Webb Simpson to win at +3300. He has a handful of Top 10s here including two runners-up but yet to win.
