PGA Tour Sentry Tournament of Champions Golf Odds & Predictions
The New Year on the PGA Tour tees off Thursday in Hawaii per usual with the winners-only Sentry Tournament of Champions from Maui.
Sentry Tournament of Champions Background
This event is only open to winners on the PGA Tour from last season or the start of this season, which began in mid-September. That doesn’t mean that everyone who did win will tee it up this week. Phil Mickelson isn’t and he was the champion of the 2019 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Tiger Woods of course won last year’s Masters (and then again at the Zozo Championship in Japan in late October) but also isn’t playing. There are 34 players in the field.
Like Mickelson, Woods usually starts his year when the Tour heads to California. Many top Europeans also often wait to play on the PGA Tour until it hits the mainland U.S. There are a couple of big-money events in the Middle East on the European Tour this month so some Euros play those. Because it’s a smaller field, there’s no cut in Maui.
Truly stunning surroundings at the Plantation Course at Kapalua in Maui. The winds can definitely be a factor, but a pretty easy track overall. It’s a par 73 at around 7,500 yards and will almost surely take a minimum of 20 under to win. No worse than 22 under has been the winning score the past four years. In 2003, Ernie Els won at a record 31 under.
This tournament has been around since 1953, with Kapalua hosting since 1999. From 2012-2015, the tournament used a Friday-Monday format but it’s the normal Thursday-Sunday now.
Sentry Tournament of Champions Betting Odds
The U.S. won the Presidents Cup a few weeks ago and seven American members of that team are playing: Justin Thomas, Dustin Johnson, Gary Woodland, Rickie Fowler, Patrick Reed, Xander Schauffele, Patrick Cantlay and Matt Kuchar.
Schauffele is the defending champion and +706 to repeat. He tied the course record with a 62 in the final round a year ago and finished at 23-under 269 to edge Woodland by a shot. It was the ninth straight year an American won the tournament. Johnson (+1000) is a two-time winner here, in 2018 and ’13. He won by a whopping eight shots two years ago. Thomas (+505) was the 2017 champion. Reed (+1100) won in 2015 and was runner-up the next year.
Spain’s Jon Rahm is the +404 favourite. He was runner-up here two years ago and eighth last year.
Canadian Golfer Odds
One Canadian has won this event: Stan Leonard in 1958, edging Billy Casper by a shot in Las Vegas. No player from Canada competed in the 2019 tournament. Corey Conners (+5100) qualified this year by taking the Texas Open last April for his first PGA Tour victory. Conners had to Monday qualify even to get into that field and became the first golfer to win on the PGA Tour after qualifying on a Monday in nine years.
Sentry Tournament of Champions Predictions
Take Rahm and Thomas for Top 10s, but Fowler is your winner at +1100. He hasn’t been worse than sixth in three trips to Maui.
