In a very tricky spot on the schedule, it’s one of the weakest fields of the year on the PGA Tour as the pros visit Silvis, Ill., for the John Deere Classic starting Thursday. Americans Ben Griffin and Chris Gotterup are co-favourites on the golf odds.

John Deere Classic

The John Deere might be on the worst spot on the non-Fall Tour schedule as it follows the U.S. Open and then the year’s final Signature Event, the Travelers Championship in Hartford. That was won in a Monday playoff (weather delayed from Sunday) in an upset by Norway’s Viktor Hovland over world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. Neither are playing this week. A lot of guys already are making their way to Europe for next week’s Scottish Open and then the British Open the week after.

This used to be played the week before the British Open itself and the tournament would fly guys over via charter after, but that’s no longer the case so that hurt the field quality. The defending champion is the USA’s Brian Campbell. He beat Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo in a playoff after both finished 72 holes at 18-under 266. Campbell’s par on the first extra hole was good enough. Grillo was playing just behind and hit wedge to just inside 40 feet on No. 18 and two-putted for par to join Campbell at 266.

That was Campbell’s second career win, both last year, but he hasn’t won since and is a +17,000 longer shot to repeat. The last player to do that at this tournament was Steve Stricker in 2011 when he three-peated. This is the last PGA Tour event to see a three-peat winner. Campbell is having a brutal year without a single Top 10. I liked an American overall in 2025 – they have won here the vast majority of times – but leaned Denny McCarthy, who finished T11.

Perhaps the most interesting player to watch this week is Jackson Koivun making his official Tour debut after a celebrated collegiate career at Auburn. He had 11 total wins in three seasons at the school and has played some Tour events in the past, including here last year when he was T11.

Jordan Spieth returns to the site of his first PGA Tour title in 2013 when he was a 19-year-old. He also won in 2015 playoff but then went nine years before coming back when he was T24 in 2024. Spieth hasn’t played here since and is +3300.

None of the world’s Top 10 are playing week at TPC Deere Run, a par 71 at 7,325 yards that was once an Arabian horse farm. The par-4 fourth had almost 40 yards added to it for this year with a new tee box. The signature hole is the par-3 16th called “Mother Earth.”

Water is in play on five holes. It’s a very easy track and it will take deep into double-digits under par to win. The tournament record of 28-under 256 was set by Davis Thompson in 2024 when he won by four. Last year was the first playoff or winner by one shot since 2017.

The two highest-ranked players in the world at No. 13 Chris Gotterup and No. 18 Ben Griffin, and they are the +1500 favourites to win here the first time. Gotterup is having a good year with two wins and four Top 10s but most of that success was early on. His best result here is fourth in 2024. Griffin was the favourite entering last year but missed the cut. He was fifth the year before.

Keith Mitchell (+2000), Jackson Koivun (+2200) and J.T. Poston (+2200) round out the favourites. Mitchell has a best result of seventh at the John Deere. He just had a T4 two weeks ago at the U.S. Open. We mentioned Koivun above, and he is off a T23 at the U.S. Open. Poston is having a strong summer and won this event in 2022 at 21-under 263, three shots clear of the field.

The lone Canadian to win the tournament was Dave Barr in a 1981 playoff over fellow Canadian Dan Halldorson as well as Woody Blackburn, Frank Conner and Victor Regalado. Canada’s David Hearn lost in a 2013 playoff against Jordan Spieth. Adam Svensson was the top finisher last year at T44, while Adam Hadwin and Ben Silverman missed the cut. Sudarshan Yellamaraju is +4500 this week with Taylor Pendrith +5500, Mackenzie Hughes +10000, Hadwin +17500, Svensson +17500 and Silverman +50000.

Like an American winner again and specifically long-shot Carson Young at +10,000. He has yet to win on Tour, but for six of the last 11 winners of this event it was their first PGA Tour victory. Young has been fifth each of the past two years in Illinois.
