2023 3M Open: PGA Tour Betting Odds
Following American Brian Harman’s win at the British Open on Sunday, it’s back to the United States and Minnesota in particular this week on the PGA Tour with the 3M Open and defending champion Tony Finau favoured on the golf odds.
The 3M Open wasn’t granted elevated status by the PGA Tour. Thus, top players aren’t obligated (essentially) to compete, so most are not with just two of the world’s Top 20 in attendance.
But six former major winners are scheduled to tee it up: Hideki Matsuyama (Masters), Stewart Cink (British Open), Jason Dufner (PGA Championship), Lucas Glover (U.S. Open), Jimmy Walker (PGA Championship) and Gary Woodland (U.S. Open).
The 3M Open, now in its fifth year, perhaps never becomes a reality without the help of Minnesota native Tom Lehman, who won six times on the PGA Tour, including the 1996 British Open. Lehman also consulted in the design of the host course, TPC Twin Cities in Blaine. It’s a par 71 at approximately 7,430 yards about 15 miles north of Minneapolis/St. Paul on a former sod farm. Lehman’s son Thomas, who turned pro in 2020 and plays mini-Tour events, got a sponsor exemption into this year’s field.
“We are really excited that we were able to extend an unrestricted sponsor exemption to Thomas and add to the story of golf in Minnesota,” said Mike Welch, 3M Open Tournament Director. “We are certain area fans will enjoy supporting him as he plays in his first PGA Tour event.”
Harman, who won the Open Championship at Royal Liverpool on Sunday for his first major, is deservedly taking the week off.
Tony Finau was the betting favourite entering the 2022 3M Open, and he won here for the first time, shooting 17-under 267 to beat out Emiliano Grillo and Sungjae Im by three shots each. Finau shot a 4-under 67 in the final round, erasing a five-stroke deficit with 11 holes left as Scott Piercy imploded down the stretch. Piercy shot 65-64-66 in the first three rounds to set a 54-hole tournament record but shot 76 on Sunday to tie for fourth, four strokes back.
We simply took an American to win last year at -263, so that cashed. Only USA players have won the 3M Open and none twice.
3M Open Golf Odds
Tony Finau is the +1300 favourite. This win certainly kickstarted Finau last year as he then won the next week on the PGA Tour as well and has now has four wins in his past 25 starts. Finau missed the cut over the weekend at the British Open and is in a mini-slump.
Cameron Young is +1500 with Sungjae Im +1700 and Hideki Matsuyama +1800. Young is playing here for the first time and comes off a T8 at the Open Championship. Im had that runner-up here last year and a T15 in 2019. He was T20 at the British Open. Matsuyama was T13 Sunday in England and has a best finish of seventh here.
Obviously no Canadian has won here. Michael Gligic was the top finisher last year at T16, followed by Adam Hadwin (T38) and Roger Sloan (T38). Nick Taylor, Adam Svensson and David Hearn missed the cut. Hadwin is +4300 this week with Taylor Pendrith +6200, Svensson +7200, Mackenzie Hughes +10300, Michael Gligic +69800 and David Hearn +166600. Hadwin has an average score of 68.33 in his past 12 rounds at the tournament with a couple of Top 10s.
3M Open Golf Predictions
While the American presence isn’t as strong here as in years past, we still like a USA winner at -200. Take Adam Hadwin at +200 as top Canadian.
