Dustin Johnson and Justin Thomas are co-favourites to win on the golf odds.

This event has only been around since 2017 when it became the first official PGA Tour event in South Korea, which is as golf-mad a country as any on the planet (the LPGA is dominated by South Koreans). Last year, it moved to Shadow Creek in Las Vegas because of the COVID pandemic and the Tour decided to keep it in Vegas for the same reason in 2021 but moved it to The Summit Club, a par 72 at around 7,430 yards. It’s a limited field of about 70, so no cut.

Some of the bigger-name PGA stars opted to skip last week’s Shriners Children’s Open in favour of playing this event. One reason why: The purse at the Shriner’s was $7 million (US). At the CJ Cup, it’s nearly $10 million (US). Needless to say, it will be a challenge handicapping a tournament playing at a course for the first time.

Americans have won the CJ Cup all four years. The defending champion is Jason Kokrak, who finished at 20-under 268 at Shadow Creek, two up on Xander Schauffele. Kokrak shot a final-round 64 to get his first PGA Tour win in his 233rd start – Kokrak, who was born in North Bay, Ontario, did win again in May at the Charles Schwab Challenge. Russell Henley led last year by three entering the final round but shot 70.

There are a few big-name stars opting to skip this week, notably world No. 1 Jon Rahm, as well as Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Cantlay.

World No. 2 Dustin Johnson and No. 6 Justin Thomas are each +1000 favourites to win. Thomas won this tournament in 2017 & ’19 in South Korea and was T12 last year at Shadow Creek. It’s Johnson’s first time playing this event.

Xander Schauffele is +1400 with Collin Morikawa, Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy each +1800. Schauffele had that runner-up finish last year, while Spieth was T38 and McIlroy T21. Sungjae Im won the Shriners Children’s Open on Sunday in Vegas and is +2500 this week. Defending champion Jason Kokrak is +4500.

Four Canadians played last year: Adam Hadwin was T28 at 5 under, Corey Conners and Nick Taylor were T61 at 3 over, and Mackenzie Hughes was T65 at +6. Hughes is +15000 this week. Hadwin finished T6 at the Shriners but isn’t playing this week. Neither is Conners or Taylor.

CJ Cup Golf Predictions

Take Thomas and McIlroy for Top 10s, but I like Schauffele at +1400 to win. He’s a Las Vegas resident so I’m guessing he knows this course (sure seemed to know Shadow Creek last year), and he also played well at the Ryder Cup.
