This tournament has been around since 1983 and was a 90-hole event for the first 20 years. In 1984, it became the first PGA Tour event in history to offer a purse exceeding $1 million (US). Tiger Woods’ first PGA Tour victory was in the 1996 version over Davis Love III. Woods doesn’t play this even these days. One of the Tour’s 59s was in the first round of the 1991 tournament at a different course by Chip Beck.

TPC Summerlin, located just west of Vegas, has hosted since 1992. It’s a par 71 at around 7,255 yards. The defending champion is Kevin Na. He and Patrick Cantlay finished 72 holes at 23-under 261. Na was spectacular on Friday and Saturday with rounds of 62-61. That 123 total in the middle two rounds was one off the Tour record of 122 set by Troy Mattison at the 2009 Frys.com Open.

Na and Cantlay both birdied the first playoff hole and then Na won it on the second with a par. Na was cruising on Sunday before a triple-bogey on the 10th hole cut his lead to a shot. It was his second win at the Shriners, also in 2011. The only other multiple-time winner here is Jim Furyk in 1995, ’98 and ’99. Americans have won the tournament every year but once since 2010.

Several PGA Tour pros have homes in Las Vegas, including Na. He’s +7100 to win a third time in Vegas.

Bryson DeChambeau is favoured on the golf odds. This will be DeChambeau’s first PGA Tour event as a major champion. A couple of weeks ago, he captured the U.S. Open at Winged Foot in New York. The long, long hitter was the only player in the field to finish under par at one of the USA’s toughest tracks. He was 6 under and six shots clear of the field. DeChambeau is +681 this week and won this tournament in 2018 at 21-under 263. He was T4 last year.

Webb Simpson is +1000 with Cantlay +1200, and Tony Finau and Hideki Matsuyama each +1600. Simpson won here in 2013 at 24-under 260 and was T7 last year. Cantlay is definitely a Horse for the Course with a win in 2018 and then runner-up finishes the past two years. He’s not playing great of late, however. Finau’s best result here is a T7, while Matsuyama is a T10.

Sergio Garcia won Sunday at the Sanderson Farms Championship in Mississippi and is +4400 to go back-to-back.

No Canadian has won this event. Adam Hadwin closed with a final-round 63 last year to finish T4 at 20 under. Nick Taylor was T29 at 14 under. Roger Sloan, Mackenzie Hughes and Graham DeLaet all missed the cut. Hadwin is +9900 this week, Taylor is +24400 and DeLaet +75000.

2020 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open Predictions

Take DeChambeau and Cantlay for Top 10s, but the winner is Matthew Wolff at +2400. The 21-year-old finished runner-up to DeChambeau at the U.S. Open and was T18 in his debut in Vegas last year.
