Formula 1’s Rough Season Continues: Emilia-Romagna Cancelled
Sports Interaction readers waiting for this week’s preview of the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix need not hold their breath. The devastating floods in and around Imola have understandably discouraged the event’s organizers from going ahead. Suffice it to say that the people of the region have other things on their mind right now.
This is the second Formula 1 race cancelled this season, after the Chinese round scheduled in April due to COVID-19 concerns.
Fans can still head over the the Formula 1 odds for all the racing action.
Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix Axed
F1 made the decision on Wednesday in an official statement on its website. Stefano Domenicali – President and CEO of Formula 1 – expressed his sentiments. The tragedy hits very close to home to him.
“It is such a tragedy to see what has happened to Imola and Emilia-Romagna, the town and region that I grew up in, and my thoughts and prayers are with the victims of the flooding and families and communities affected.”
As recently as Tuesday there was still uncertainty as to what F1 would do about the delicate situation. TSN features an article in which AlphaTauri driver Nyck de Vries explained how he was trying to reach his team’s headquarters in Faenza on Tuesday ahead of marketing events planned for the next day.
F1’s Next Phase: Monaco
Reports are that the race is unlikely to be rescheduled this season. Angelo Sticchi Damiani, president of the Italian Automobile Club, had suggested that the current contract with F1, set to expire in 2025, may be extended for one year to make up for this year’s loss.
The next race is the legendary Monaco Grand Prix on May 28.
At the moment, Red Bull is having a terrific season. It two pilots are first and second in the standings. Defending champions Max Verstappen leads the way with 119 points, followed by Sergio Perez’s 105. Canadian Lance Stroll Aston Martin is eighth with 27 points.
