Hamilton Tiger-Cats
It was a tough loss for Hamilton last week as they fell to Montreal by one point thanks to a last-second Alouettes field goal. Former Als quarterback Matthew Shiltz led the charge for the Tiger-Cats, completing 27 of 39 pass attempts for 303 yards and two touchdowns. Shiltz connected with receiver Tim White 11 times. White finished with a game-high 145 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Jamie Newman punched in a one-yard rushing touchdown on his only carry of the game.
Hamilton added some reinforcements to the roster this week, signing defensive back Rodney Randle Jr. and receiver Jaylon Redd. Randle played a total of 19 games with Montreal over the last two seasons, recording 44 defensive tackles, 11 special teams tackles and two interceptions. Redd attended mini camp with the Seattle Seahawks and Tampa Bay Buccaneers this year. In 52 games with the University of Oregon between 2017 and 2022, Redd caught 131 passes for 1,435 yards and 16 touchdowns. He added another 179 yards and five touchdowns on 24 carries.
Toronto Argonauts
A late fumble by quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson proved costly last week as it essentially sealed a loss for Toronto. Bethel-Thompson finished the game with 276 passing yards and an interception. He completed 27 of 43 pass attempts and threw no touchdowns. A.J. Ouellette was the Argos’ top receiver, picking up 92 yards on seven catches. DaVaris Daniels had 70 yards on five receptions. Chad Kelly led the running backs with 28 yards and a touchdown on four carries.
Toronto has dealt with it’s fair share of injury news lately. Defensive end Ja’Gared Davis reportedly suffered a setback in his return from a knee injury and running back Andrew Harris will miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn pectoral muscle. Both players were highly coveted free agent additions this offseason and their loss is a big blow to an Argos team struggling to stay ahead of Montreal in the standings.
