Stampeders vs. RedBlacks Prediction: CFL Week 8 Point Spread, Odds

The 4-2 Ottawa RedBlacks sits second in the East Division as they prepare for a Week 8 showdown against the 3-3 Calgary Stampeders on Friday. Ottawa is coming in off a 20-16 win against Edmonton last week, while Calgary slipped by BC 25-24.

The Stampeders opened as slim 1.5-point favourites to win on the CFL odds, with the total pegged at 51.5.

CFL Odds and Betting

These teams split the season series last year, with the RedBlacks’ 43-41 overtime win in Week 6 snapping a four-game losing streak against the Stamps. Overall, Calgary has won eight of the last 10 head-to-heads, while the total has gone Under in seven of those games.

The Stampeders have rewarded bettors with a 5-1 record against the spread this season, including four straight covers. They’re an even 3-3 on the Over/Under, but keep in mind they’ve hit the Over in five of their last six games against teams with winning records.

Ottawa has covered in all four of their wins in 2024, but they’re 0-2 ATS when they lose. They’ve trended more toward low scoring games as the total has gone Under in four of six games this season.

Ottawa and Calgary are both long shots to win the Grey Cup on the CFL futures board, with the RedBlacks sitting at +1600 and the Stamps at +2000.

Calgary Stampeders

Calgary proved they can hang with the best of the west in last week’s narrow win over the BC Lions. Jake Maier led the way, throwing for 307 yards and three TDs. Jalen Philpot, Clark Barnes and Reggie Begelton each caught touchdown passes, with Philpot posting a game-high 79 receiving yards. Maier has had a solid start to the season, tossing for 1,559 yards with 11 TDs and five interceptions.

Despite not having a top-five running back in the league, the Stamps have been one of the better rushing teams this season. They average the second-most rushing yards per game (101.5), with Tommy Stevens ranking third in rushing TDs (four). The defensive side of the ball, however, has been a struggle. Calgary ranks second-last in average total yards allowed per game (390.5) and they give up the most rushing yards per play (6.1).

Ottawa RedBlacks

Ottawa was playing two games in five days, but they still managed to sweep their home-and-home series against the winless Elks. Dru Brown passed for 257 yards against Edmonton last week, but he didn’t have a passing touchdown and he was picked off twice. It was defence and special teams that earned the victory. Field goal kicker Lewis Ward finished 4-for-5 on the night while the RedBlacks limited the Elks to just 40 rushing yards.

Ottawa sits in the middle of the pack in most offensive categories, but they struggle to generate points as their average of 23.5 points per game this season is the second-lowest in the CFL. It’s a similar story defensively, with the team generally ranking as the fourth-best defence in most major categories.
