Stampeders vs. Argonauts Prediction: CFL Week 12 Point Spread, Odds

Week 12 of the CFL season makes a stop in Toronto with the East Division-leading Argonauts playing host to the struggling Calgary Stampeders on Friday night.

The 7-1 Argos are fresh off their final bye week of the regular season and last played Aug. 13 in a 44-31 home victory over the Ottawa Redblacks.

Calgary’s struggles continued in last week’s 19-18 home defeat against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers as the Stamps now sit second-last in the West Division standings with a 3-7 record.

Toronto is favoured to win on the CFL odds.

CFL Odds and Betting

The Stampeders have won three straight games in this head-to-head series, including a 20-7 home victory in Week 9 this season. The game still stands as Calgary’s only home win in 2023. The Stampeders relied heavily on the run-game, with Dedrick Mills accounting for 137 of the team’s season-high 168 rushing yards. Argos quarterback Chad Kelly left the game limping in the second quarter and did not return.

Calgary has traditionally dominated in this all-time series, going 15-2 straight up in their last 17 games against the Argonauts. They’re 7-1-1 against the spread in their last nine trips to Toronto, but have failed to cover in six of 10 games overall this season. The total has gone Under in nine of the Stampeders’ last 10 games against the Argos.

Toronto remains undefeated at home this season with a 4-0 record at BMO Field. They’ve been a great cover option in 2023, going 7-1 ATS overall, including 4-0 ATS at home. The total has gone Under in three of the Argonauts last four games.

Toronto enters Week 12 with the second-best odds to win the Grey Cup at +180, trailing only Winnipeg at +170. The Stampeders sit in the bottom-third of the league at +2000 to win the Grey Cup.

Calgary Stampeders

Despite facing the Blue Bombers’ backup quarterback, Calgary couldn’t find a way to get the job done last week. A late third quarter interception thrown by Stamps quarterback Jake Maier proved to be a costly error. It was one of many errors for Maier this year, who leads the CFL with 2,398 passing yards but has also thrown a league-high 12 interceptions compared to eight touchdowns in his first full season as Calgary’s starter. Maier has thrown at least one interception in all but two games this year and hasn’t thrown a touchdown pass in four straight.

The offensive stat line is ugly for the Stampeders in 2023. They rank eighth in total average yards per game (330.5), seventh in passing yards per game (241.2), sixth in rushing yards per game (89.3) and sixth in points per game (21.7.). There’s not much hope for Calgary this year if Maier can’t get back to the form that saw him throw 19 touchdowns and just 10 interceptions through his first two CFL seasons as Bo Levi Mitchell’s backup.

Toronto Argonauts

In his second CFL season, Kelly continues to be the driving force behind an Argos team that has a serious shot at winning back-to-back Grey Cups. Kelly completed 21 of 28 pass attempts last week, throwing for 417 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. The performance helped Toronto fans breathe a little easier after Kelly was knocked out of the previous week’s game with an ankle injury. The 29-year-old, who is a top Most Outstanding Player candidate, ranks fourth in the CFL in passing yards (2,041), third in touchdown passes (13) and has thrown just five interceptions.

Receivers DaVaris Daniels and Cam Phillips are both showing increased chemistry with Kelly. Daniels racked up 180 receiving yards and three touchdowns on six receptions last week, while Phillips finished with 115 yards on five catches. It was the first time since 2014 that two Argos receivers hit the 100-yard plateau in the same game.
