Calgary snapped a four-game losing streak against Montreal last week, but still couldn’t manage to find a win in a 19-19 tie. The Riders were on a bye in Week 15 and they come into week 16 stumbling on their own four-game losing streak following a 26-21 loss in Winnipeg two weeks ago.

Saskatchewan opened as 2.5-point favourites to win on the CFL odds, with the total pegged at 50.5.

Strangely, these two West Division rivals haven’t met yet this season. Calgary took two of three games last year, with the first two games in the season series decided by three or less points while hitting the Over. The teams will close out this year’s season series on October 26 in Saskatchewan.

At 5-7-1, the Roughriders sit third in the West Division, one point ahead of Edmonton and three back of BC and Winnipeg. Every game is key as only five points separate first from last in the West. Saskatchewan is 7-6 against the spread, with the Over hitting in eight of 13 games.

Calgary is last in the crowded West Division with a 4-8-1 record, but they could move into a playoff position with a win against Saskatchewan. Like the Riders, the Stamps are also 7-6 ATS and 8-5 on the Over/Under.

Saskatchewan Roughriders

Saskatchewan is likely grateful for last week’s bye as it helps them reset following a fourth straight loss in the 20th annual edition of the Banjo Bowl two weeks ago. Quarterback Trevor Harris had some highs and lows, finishing 21-of-33 for 287 passing yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Harris’ favourite target was Kian Schaffer-Baker, who finished with a season-high 120 receiving yards. Frankie Hickson had 46 rushing yards on nine carries, but no other Roughriders’ player had a rushing attempt.

Saskatchewan made a big move to boost their run game, which ranks last in the CFL in both average rushing yards per game (78.7) and average rushing yards per play (4.4). The Riders signed running back Ryquell Armstead, who started the season with Ottawa, rushing for 623 yards and three TDs before being released in early September. The hope is Armstead will fill the void left by A.J. Oullette, who has been limited to seven games this season because of a hip injury.

Calgary Stampeders

Penalties on both teams slowed any momentum in Calgary’s tie against Montreal last week, with the clubs combining for 201 lost yards. Stampeders quarterback Jake Maier got the start after being benched in favour of Logan Bonner two weeks ago. Maier was 29-of-37 for 236 passing yards, one touchdown and no interceptions after throwing four picks three weeks ago.

Dedrick Mills had a monster performance last week, finishing with 122 rushing yards on 22 carries. Despite only playing in eight games this season, Mills ranks sixth in the CFL in rushing yards (593). If he had played all 13 games this season, he would project to have 964 rushing yards, five more than league-leader William Stanback.
