Week 2 of the CFL regular season kicks off Thursday night from Ottawa as the Redblacks are the last team to take the field in 2018 whey they host Saskatchewan. Sports Interaction oddsmakers list Ottawa as a 2.5-point favourite for this CFL matchup.

CFL Betting Odds

Ottawa finished second in the East Division last year with an 8-9-1 record, a half-game behind Toronto. The Redblacks were 3-5-1 at home in the regular season. Their year came to an end there in the Eastern Semi-Final, a 31-20 loss to Saskatchewan. Kevin Glenn threw for 252 yards and a touchdown for the Roughriders, but he’s no longer with the team. Marcus Thigpen ran for 169 yards and a touchdown, but he’s suspended the first two games this year for violating the CFL’s drug policy.

Trevor Harris threw for 457 yards for Ottawa that day and two touchdowns, but it took him 60 attempts to do so and he was picked off twice. It was Harris’ third multi-pick game of the 2017 season. Ottawa also lost to the visiting Roughriders 18-17 in Week 15 of the regular season but won 33-32 in Saskatchewan two weeks later.

Saskatchewan Roughriders

We predicted a Saskatchewan 30-26 victory over visiting Toronto last Friday and the Roughriders prevailed 27-19 as 3-point underdogs. The Saskatchewan defence held the Argos to just five points through three quarters and 265 yards overall. Charleston Hughes had three sacks in his Roughriders debut, and Nick Williams returned a fourth-quarter interception 65 yards for a TD and a 24-12 lead. Zach Collaros had an efficient game under centre, completing 18 of 25 for 203 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions. Collaros, acquired this offseason from Hamilton, was in a training camp battle to start at QB with Canadian Brandon Bridge. Another new addition, running back Jerome Messam, had 72 yards rushing on 21 carries and caught two passes.

Ottawa RedBlacks

The Redblacks, the 2016 Grey Cup champions, had a great Week 1 even though they didn’t play because the three other East Division teams all lost (each by at least eight points). Ottawa made several changes to the roster and coaching staff in the wake of that playoff loss to the Roughriders. The team hired former Alouettes defensive coordinator Noel Thorpe to the same role after Ottawa created a league-low 22 turnovers last year. Expect a much more aggressive scheme. Harris, who signed a one-year extension in December, returns after leading the CFL in passer efficiency and tied for No. 1 with 30 TD passes in 2017. He was hurt in the 2018 preseason opener but expects to play Thursday. Veteran receivers Brad Sinopoli, Greg Ellingson and Diontae Spencer all are back for Harris. The Redblacks could start four Canadian offensive linemen in the opener.
