RedBlacks vs. Stampeders Prediction: CFL Week 3 Point Spread, Odds
The first of two CFL games on Saturday in Week 3 features East Division last-place Ottawa, seeking its first win, visiting West co-leading Calgary, which is yet to lose, with a 4 p.m. ET kickoff. The Stamps are 1-point favourites on the CFL odds with a total of 51.5 that is the highest of the week.
CFL Odds and Betting
Saturday marks the first of two regular-season meetings between the RedBlacks and Stampeders with Calgary visiting Ottawa in Week 9. The RedBlacks swept the two last year, including 31-29 in Calgary in Week 11.
Trailing 29-28 with just over a minute left, Ottawa forced a Calgary punt. Clutch completions from RedBlacks QB Jeremiah Masoli to Jaelon Acklin and then Bralon Addison put Lewis Ward into position to kick for the win. He nailed the walk-off from 51 yards out. There were a total of six lead changes. Masoli was 27-for-35 for 254 yards and a passing touchdown. Ryquell Armstead rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown, adding 44 more yards on six receptions. Jake Maier finished with 269 passing yards in the loss.
Despite losing the past three overall, Calgary still leads the series 12-6-2. The Stamps’ last win was 26-15 on the road almost two years ago Saturday. The total has gone under in eight of the past 11.
Ottawa RedBlacks
We forecast Ottawa to lose 30-27 in its home opener to Montreal in Week 2, but it lost 39-18. With starting QB Dru Brown out injured (hip), backup Matt Shiltz threw for 205 yards and a touchdown pass to Bralon Addison, but he had three picks (on batted balls) in the RedBlacks’ 11th straight home loss in the series.
The tailback duo of William Stanback and Daniel Adeboboye only rushed for 34 yards as the offensive line struggled in all facets. Geno Lewis had 56 receiving yards but saw his nine-game touchdown streak come to an end, one shy of tying the league mark set by Hall of Famer Terry Evanshen.
Brown has been practicing this week, so he should return barring a setback. He completed 34-of-41 passing attempts for 413 yards and two touchdowns in a 31-26 season-opening loss to the Roughriders. Ottawa is 1-8 ATS in its past nine games.
Calgary Stampeders
Calgary enters Week 3 as one of three unbeaten teams and tied with Saskatchewan atop the West Division. The Stamps rank second in the league in defence in points per game allowed at 22.5 led by rookie linebacker Marquel Lee, who is among league leaders with 15 tackles.
In last Saturday’s 29-19 win at defending Grey Cup champion Toronto, cornerback Adrian Green was the defensive star with two interceptions, including a pick-six. QB Vernon Adams Jr. completed 17 of 25 passing for 301 yards and a rushing score. His offence ranks third in yards per game (399.5) and tied for second in points per (33.5). Tailback Dedrick Mills (122 yards) and Adams (87 yards) are both among CFL leaders in rushing yards.
Wide receiver Reggie Begelton exited the win over Toronto with a knee injury and has been placed on the six-game injured list. Jalen Philpot had his best game as a pro on Saturday with Begelton leaving early as Philpot had six catches for 117 yards. Two of those catches went for more than 30 yards. The Stamps are 7-3 SU in their past 10 at home vs. Ottawa.
