After dropping two straight games to Toronto, the Saskatchewan Roughriders will look to get back in the win column when they host the B.C. Lions in CFL Week 8 action on Friday night.  Because of a COVID outbreak, the Riders were shorthanded in last week’s 31-21 loss to the Argos and they now sit fourth in the West Division with a 4-3 record.  B.C., on the other hand, is third in the West with a 4-1 record following a 17-12 home victory against Hamilton last week.

The Lions are 2-point favourites to win on the CFL odds, with a total of 49.0.

CFL Odds and Betting

It’s been all Saskatchewan in this head-to-head as the Riders have won eight straight meetings between these teams, including two last season.

B.C. has dropped 13 of their last 19 games on the road, although they won their only game away from BC Place this season.  They’re 3-2 against the spread this year, but they’ve failed to cover in seven of their last eight games against Saskatchewan.  The total has gone Over in nine of the Lions’ last 11 games, including three of five this season.

The Roughriders come into this matchup with five wins in their last six home games dating back to last season.  They’re 4-3 ATS in 2022 and 4-1 ATS in their last five home dates.  The total has gone Over in four of Saskatchewan’s last five games.

BC Lions

Rookie Canadian quarterback Nathan Rourke came through for the Lions again last week as he tossed for 250 yards and two touchdowns.  He completed 22 of 30 pass attempts while being picked off twice and sacked once.  Rourke, who was born in B.C. but grew up in Ontario, leads the CFL in touchdown passes (14), ranks second in quarterback efficiency (123.0) and is third in total passing yards (1,605) despite playing the fewest games of any starting quarterback.

Kicker Sean Whyte converted his only field goal attempt last week, a 37-yard kick, bringing his record to a perfect 7-for-7 on field goals this season.  Lucky Whitehead recorded 111 receiving yards and caught his first touchdown pass of the season.  Jevon Cottoy hauled in B.C.’s other touchdown pass.

Receiver Bryan Burnham is nearing a return from the six-game injured list, but likely won’t be back this week.  Burnham suffered broken ribs and a collapsed lung after taking a hard hit in the Lions’ Week 3 blowout victory over Toronto.

Saskatchewan Roughriders

After losing to the Argonauts in the Touchdown Atlantic game in Week 6, Saskatchewan was dealt a tough blow in the Week 7 rematch as a COVID outbreak delayed the second meeting between the teams.  When they did play the rescheduled game, the Riders were without 10 regulars in the lineup, including starting quarterback Cody Fajardo and backup Mason Fine.  Rookie Jake Dolegala made his first career CFL start in place of Fajardo.  Dolegala completed 13 of 28 pass attempts for 131 yards, one touchdown and one interception.  Fajardo is also dealing with a knee injury, which makes it likely either Dolegala or Fine will get the start this week.

Tevin Jones caught the lone Saskatchewan touchdown pass last week, while Brett Lauther successfully converted all three of his field goal attempts.
