It’s been as close to a perfect season as you can hope for the Argos as they sit 3-0 straight up both at home and on the road. They’re also a perfect 6-0 against the spread overall. Toronto enters Week 9 as a +195 favourite to win the Grey Cup.
After years of home field dominance, Calgary has struggled at McMahon Stadium this season, dropping all three home games. They’re 2-5 ATS overall, including 0-3 ATS at home. The Stampeders are +1400 to win the Grey Cup, with only Ottawa (+1500), Saskatchewan (+1500) and winless Edmonton (+18,500) sitting as longer shots.
Toronto Argonauts
Last week’s victory was the second straight year the Argos have defeated Saskatchewan in the Touchdown Atlantic game in Nova Scotia. It moved Toronto to 6-0 on the season, the franchise’s best start in 83 years. The game was out of reach before halftime, with the Argonauts leading 21-0 before the five-minute mark of the second quarter.
Quarterback Chad Kelly didn’t need to be remarkable, finishing 13-of-22 for 122 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception. Kelly ranks fifth in the CFL in total passing yards (1,530) and he is tied for third in touchdown passes (8).
Toronto’s success this season is due to a balanced group effort. Offensively, they are averaging a CFL-high 36.2 points per game. Defensively, they’re allowing an average of 20.7 ppg, the second-best mark in the league. With no major injury concerns, the Argos are set up to continue rolling.
Calgary Stampeders
Calgary has only itself to blame in last week’s loss. The Stamps had multiple opportunities to put the game away, but failed to convert on two late red-zone possessions in a loss to a very average Montreal team. Kicker Rene Paredes was 6-for-6 on field goals, scoring all 18 of Calgary’s points.
It was a disappointing performance from quarterback Jake Maier, who threw no touchdowns while being picked off twice and sacked three times. Maier was lucky not to throw more interceptions as Montreal defenders had their hands on multiple pass attempts. He finished the game 24-of-44 for 256 yards. It’s been an inconsistent year for Maier, who leads the CFL with 1,928 passing yards, but has also thrown a league-high 11 interceptions.
At 2-5, the Stampeders are now in danger of their first losing season since 2007. The team is averaging 24.7 ppg on offence, ranking fourth in the CFL. The defence is allowing 27.4 ppg, the second-worst mark in the league. Calgary’s season could come down to their next stretch of games, which will see them play Toronto twice and B.C. and Winnipeg once each.
