Mayweather Stripped of Welterweight Title

Multiple reports have indicated that Floyd Mayweather, Jr. has been stripped of his World Boxing Organization world welterweight title.

Mayweather won the WBO championship in a unanimous decision against Manny Pacquiao in a fight that broke viewing and revenue records for boxing in May. The WBO has decided to take the title back after Mayweather failed to pay a $200,000 sanctioning fee.

“The WBO world championship committee is allowed no other alternative but to cease to recognize Mr. Floyd Mayweather, Jr. as the WBO welterweight champion of the world and vacate his title for failing to comply with our WBO regulations of world championship contests,” said the WBO in a written statement to ESPN.

The victory of Pacquiao improved Mayweather’s record to 48-0. The fight generated more than $600 million in pay-per-view and ticket revenue, $180 million of which was paid to Mayweather. The 38-year-old will continue his reign as champion in both the WBC and WBA at both welterweight and super welterweight divisions.
