Phoenix Mercury’s Diana Taurasi Hits 10,000-Point Milestone

The Phoenix Mercury are having a rough season, but year in and year out they can always count on one constant: Diana Taurasi. She hit a contested three-point shot in the third quarter versus the Atlanta Dream Thursday night that helped her cross the 10K-point milestone. Taurasi is the only player in the league’s history to achieve that.

Mercury’s Diana Taurasi Reaches 10,000 Points

Drafted in 2004, the 41-year-old California native has played her entire WNBA career with the Phoenix Mercury. A league champion in 2007, 2009, and 2014, she’s also been league MVP (2009), a Finals MVP (2009, 2014), and a 10-time WNBA All-Star.

Those accomplishments put her in the history book of great basketball players, male or female. What she did on Thursday night in front of the Mercury fans was on a different level. Her longevity and commitment to the game of basketball as well as the Mercury organization is the stuff of greatness.

The shot itself came in the third quarter of a game that had started poorly for Phoenix but saw the hosts claw their way back into it. Moriah Jefferson found her teammate on the right side of the arc and, despite being double-teamed, Taurasi sent her arching shot through the hoop. The Mercury eventually claimed a 91-71 victory, thus improving their record to 7-19. It gives them a slither of hope for a postseason berth although the odds aren’t in their favour.

No one doubts that the night belonged to Taurasi, regardless of what the game’s outcome might have been. It should also be stated that the WNBA legend played out of her mind last night, scoring 42 points on 12-for-21 shooting and going 6-for-13 from beyond the arc.
