US Open Second Round Betting Odds, Picks: Trio of Canadians favoured to win on Day 2

Across both the men’s and women’s singles draws at the U.S. Open, three Canadians made it into the field. All three are still alive after round one. Felix Auger-Aliassime, Denis Shapovalov and Leylah Fernandez are successfully carrying Canada’s torch so far.

Among the other first-round winners in New York were Carlos Alcaraz, Ben Shelton and Aryna Sabalenka. However, Novak Djokovic and Arthur Fils were not as fortunate. Djokovic suffered a shock exit at the hands of Mariano Navone, while Fils – the recent Cincinnati champion – got bounced out by Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Now that it’s time for second-round competition, let’s take a look at some of the best bets to make on Wednesday and Thursday.

Felix Auger-Aliassime vs. Karen Khachanov best bet: Over 38.5 games (-112) 

The head-to-head series between Auger-Aliassime and Karen Khachanov could not be more competitive. It is all tied up 2-2 overall, including 1-1 on hard courts and 1-1 on grass. Three of their first four meetings required a final set, and the only one that didn’t was a close 7-6(5), 6-4 decision in Auger-Aliassime’s favour on the lawns of ‘s-Hertogenbosch in 2022. In other words, not once have they ever played a lopsided match. Their second-round showdown should be no exception.

Auger-Aliassime is a clear favourite, but he needed four tight sets to escape Rinky Hijikata in his opening match, whereas Khachanov looked very good in a straight-set rout of Roman Andres Burruchaga. It’s also worth noting that this is only Auger-Aliassime’s second hard-court tournament of the summer; in his first one he lost to Frances Tiafoe 6-3, 6-4 in the Cincinnati fourth round. The third seed got a real test from Hijikata on Monday night and should get an even sterner one from Khachanov on Thursday. 

Leylah Fernandez vs. Mananchaya Sawangkaew best bet: Fernandez -1.5 sets (-115) 

Fernandez may not be in peak form these days, but we can’t forget that this is someone who made it all the way to the U.S. Open final in 2021. The 23-year-old probably won’t go that far this time around, but at least a third-round performance is well within reach. Fernandez is playing well, as she upset Mirra Andreeva en route to the Toronto fourth round last month and clobbered Shuai Zhang 6-3, 6-2 at the U.S. Open on Sunday.

As for Mananchaya Sawangkaew, she is a 24-year-old from Thailand ranked No. 94 in the world. This is her first-ever appearance in the U.S. Open main draw. Sawangkaew did well to secure a spot in round two, but Fernandez should end the underdog’s run without too much trouble. 

Denis Shapovalov vs. Luca van Assche best bet: Shapovalov ML (-135) 

Why isn’t Shapovalov a bigger favourite against a relatively little-known opponent? Well, Luca van Assche is arguably playing the best tennis of his career right now. However, the Frenchman’s most notable result has come on clay in the form of a title in Estoril. Van Assche won a Challenger event on hard courts just a couple of weeks ago, but he had not had any success on this surface at the ATP level before beating Cameron Norrie in the U.S. Open first round.

Shapovalov also played well on Sunday, easing past Miomir Kecmanovic in four relatively uncompetitive sets. The only previous encounter between these two players came at Roland Garros in 2024, when Shapovalov cruised 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. Moreover, the left-hander loves New York. He advanced to the quarterfinals in 2021 and has reached at least the third round on a whopping six other occasions.
