Serena Williams, Maria Sharipova Meet Again In Wimbledon Semifinals

Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova will square off at the Wimbledon semifinal on Thursday, July 9th at 8am ET. The winner of this semifinal will go on to play the winner of the other semifinal between Agnieszka Radwanska and Garbine Muguruza in the Wimbledon finals round on July 11th.

Muguruza was responsible for sending Williams home early from the 2014 French Open, but this time Serena is the -584 favorite to beat Sharapova and then the -305 favorite to lift the Venus Rosewater Dish, regardless of who is on the other side of the net.

“I love playing Maria,” said Serena. “I think she’s brings out the best in me. I think I bring out the best in her.”

Williams has shown no mercy during the Wimbledon tournament and is just two matches away from completing the second “Serena Slam,” or fourth consecutive major tournament, of her record-breaking career.

Williams ousted her own sister, Venus, from the tournament over the weekend and was back in the trenches on Tuesday and managed to defeat former No. 1 Victoria Azarenka to set up a semifinal match with her long-time rival, Maria Sharapova.

The numbers against Azarenka were phenomenal, 46 winners and just 12 unforced errors; a dominating performance when compared to the lackluster showing and near defeat against Heather Watson last Friday.

“It was a high-quality match,” said Azarenka to reporters. “I can’t say I went out there and didn’t play well. We just saw today why Serena is No. 1.”

At this point, it’s hard to envision anyone truly giving Williams a run for her money and preventing another Wimbledon win and a 21st grand slam title. Serena has won 16 matches in a row, with her last defeat coming in 2004 at the year-end championships.
