Djokovic Breaks Record, Returns to Number One in ATP Rankings
On Sunday tennis superstar Novak Djokovic defeated Casper Rudd in the French Open final 7-6, 6-3-7-5. This resulted in three things happening. The most obvious was that he won the tournament. The second is that the victory earned him is 23rd Grand Slam trophy, an ATP record. Third, as of Monday morning, his APT ranking went from third to first.

Novak Djokovic Number One Again
Say what one will about Djokovic, he is indisputably one of the greatest tennis players to have graced the court, beaten grass, clay, or any variety. With 23 Grand Slams to his name, he surpasses Rafael Nadal (22), who eventually passed Roger Federer (20). They all have their own stories of greatness to tell, and fans will argue until the cows come home about who the “best” is, but statistically, Djokovic is in a class of his own. Officially.
He holds three Roland Garros wins, 10 Australian Open victories, seven successes at Wimbledon, and a trio of U.S. Open championships.
Furthermore, his success in France sent him back to the number spot in the ATP rankings, replacing Carlos Alcarez in the process – he face the 20-year-old in the French semi-final. The 36-year-old has been ranked number one no fewer than 10 times. His longest tenure was his third, when he climbed the mountain in July 2014, only to be overtaken by Andy Murray 122 weeks later in November 2016. Even his first stint was impressive, lasting 53 weeks from July 2011 to July of the following year when Roger Federer reclaimed the top spot.
At the moment, Djokovic is halfway to recording a calendar Grand Slam (Australian, French, Wimbledon, U.S.), something he fell one tournament shy of in 2021 when he lost in the U.S. Open.
