The 2019 U.S. Open Women's Final is a clash between a legend and a rising star, as Serena Williams takes on 19-year-old Canadian sensation Bianca Andreescu.
Bianca Andreescu, a teenager from Mississauga, Ontario, has the tennis world’s attention. Why? Andreescu was the first teenager to get to the U.S. Open semis in over ten years, she’s only the fourth woman ever to reach the final four in her first main-draw appearance, and she’s the third Canadian woman to get as far as she’s gotten in the entire history of the U.S. Open.
2019 U.S. Open Women’s Final Odds
As of this writing, Andreescu is the +148 underdog in this matchup and Serena Williams is the -199 favorite.
Last year, Bianca Andreescu was 178th in the WTA rankings. At the end of these U.S. Open finals, win or lose, she’ll be in the top 10. Her journey to this point has been a thrill to watch. She will once again face the legendary Serena Williams in a tournament final.
Earlier this summer, the two ended up in the final of the Rogers Cup. Andreescu was up 3-1 in the first set when Serena requested a medical timeout. Moments later, the umpire announced that Williams was retiring from the match, and that gave Bianca Andreescu her second WTA Premier title of the season.
During the first set of her semifinal match against Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic, it looked like Andreescu was struggling. She got away with a 7-6 and then had another breakdown in the second set, at one point being down 2-5. It was then that Andreescu hit the overdrive button, and won five straight games to go 7-5 in the second set and guarantee her place in the final. It’s the first time ever a Canadian singles tennis player will play for a U.S. Open title.
A huge part of Bianca Andreescu’s popularity comes from her affable charm. When she made it to the semifinals, and was interviewed about her quarterfinal win, Andreescu joked with the reporter, saying, “I said, ‘Is this real life?’ Twice. I couldn’t really believe it at that moment. But then when I sat down, I just couldn’t stop smiling — just like I can’t now.”
Two decades ago, before Bianca Andreescu was even born, a teenaged Serena Williams won the first of what is now six U.S. Open singles titles that she has to her name. Williams has won 101 matches in Arthur Ashe stadium, tied for most-ever at the U.S. Open.
Williams made quick work of Elina Svitolina, in the semifinal, losing just four games in two sets, and put on a serving clinic, winning 86% of her first serves in play.
What has bettors second-guessing Williams’ ability to win this one is her more recent Grand Slam loss at Wimbledon to Simona Halep. She also lost three of her nine finals at Flushing Meadows, including a loss to Naomi Osaka that was overshadowed by controversy surrounding William’s very vocal frustration at the officials.
With a win this weekend, Williams has a chance to tie Margaret Court’s all-time record 24 grand slam singles crowns.
Andreescu vs. Williams: US Open Women’s Final Prediction
On paper, Serena Williams is the clear favourite to win this one. That said, she hasn’t done as well as expected in her last three Grand Slam Finals. But her experience dwarfs Andreescu’s, who has yet to compete in a match this huge. This is a match between a tennis legend and a star-in-the-making, and Bianca will put up a hell of a fight. We do see Williams taking this one to earn her 24th Grand Slam.
