Denis Shapovalov
Denis Shapovalov is one of the biggest stars of Canadian tennis. Entering the tournament as the No. 27 seed, the 26-year-old from Vaughan, Ontario easily knocked off Spain’s Pedro Martinez in the first round and he will face Austrian qualifier Filip Misolic in Round 2 on Thursday morning.
It won’t get any easier for Shapovalov, however, as it looks like he will face three-time French Open champion and former World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the third round, should he advance. Shapovalov will be looking to reach the third round of the French Open for the third straight year.
Victoria Mboko
Ranked No. 120 in the world, Toronto’s Victoria Mboko has cruised through the first two rounds at Roland-Garros with straight set wins over Lulu Sun of New Zealand and Eva Lys of Germany.
The 18-year-old hasn’t dropped a set through five matches, including three in qualifying, improving her season record to 42-5. Most of those wins have come on the lower ITF Tour, where she has five titles.
Mboko has a much tougher matchup in Round 3 as she will face Olympic champion and No. 8 seed Qinwen Zheng of China.
Gabriel Diallo
Montreal’s Gabriel Diallo earned his first career main-draw win at Roland-Garros with a straight sets upset win over No. 18 seed Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina on Monday.
The 23-year-old Diallo, who opened the French Open ranked No. 54 in the world, will face No. 35 Tallon Griefspoor of the Netherlands in the second round on Thursday morning.
Diallo is also moving on in doubles with British partner Jacob Fearnley after a 6-0, 6-2 win over Nicolas Barrientos of Colombia and Rithvik Bollipalli of India.
