2022 Wimbledon Championships: Men’s and Women’s Tennis Odds, Prediction
The most prestigious of tennis’ four Grand Slam events is the grass-court Wimbledon tournament from London. It begins Sunday from the All England Club. Novak Djokovic is an early -153 favourite to win on the men’s side, while Iga Swiatek is favoured to win the women’s tournament at +106.
Djokovic, Nadal Lead Men’s Odds
First, a quick note on which players aren’t in the men’s field this year, notably world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev, No. 2 Alexander Zverev and the legendary Roger Federer.
All England Club officials banned Russian and Belarussian players because of the events in Ukraine, so that ruled out the Russian Medvedev. Most players were very against this move and in fact the ATP and WTA responded by stripping the tournament of its ranking points. Medvedev’s best Wimbledon result was the fourth round. Zverev, from Germany, tore ligaments in his right ankle in Paris during his French Open semifinal match against eventual champion Rafael Nadal. It’s the first time since 1973 that Wimbledon will be played without the No. 1 and No. 2 players in the world.
Federer has won a record eight Wimbledon titles but hasn’t played since last year’s quarterfinal loss due to injuries/surgeries and at age 40 might be done for good.
Djokovic has won this tournament six times, including the past three (there was no event in 2020 due to COVID). He is the top seed and -153 favourite to join Federer and Pete Sampras as the only players in the modern era with seven Wimbledon titles. Djokovic beat Italy’s Matteo Berrettini in four sets in the 2021 final.
Djokovic and Nadal were on the same side of the draw at the French Open but that won’t be the case at Wimbledon because Nadal is the No. 2 seed and +440 second-favourite. The Spaniard beat Djokovic in the French quarters on the way to his record 22nd Grand Slam title, two ahead of Djokovic and Federer. There was some thought that Nadal would skip Wimbledon like he did last year to rest his troublesome foot.
Berrettini (+425), Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz (+582) and Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime (+662) round out the favourites. Auger-Aliassime is seeded sixth. Auger-Aliassime’s best result at this tournament was the 2021 quarterfinals. Fellow Canadian Denis Shapovalov is seeded 13th and +2000. Shapovalov reached the 2021 semifinals and lost in straight sets to Djokovic.
Swiatek Clear Women’s Favourite
There will be no women’s repeat Wimbledon winner because 2021 champion and former world No. 1 Ashleigh Barty of Australia surprisingly retired not long ago. Another former No. 1, Victoria Azarenka, is from Belarus so she can’t compete. And yet another ex-No. 1, Naomi Osaka, is not playing due to injury. Canadian Eugenie Bouchard, a 2014 Wimbledon finalist, is out as she works her way back from surgery on her right shoulder.
Current world No. 1 Swiatek of Poland is the +106 favourite to win her first title here. Swiatek is a former Wimbledon junior champion with a best result of the fourth round as a professional. She comes into Wimbledon after winning the French Open for a second time. Swiatek is on a 35-match winning streak, the longest on the WTA Tour since 2000. She has dropped just two sets in her last 27 matches.
American Coco Gauff, just 18 years old and seeded 11th, is +800 after losing to Swiatek in the French finals. Fellow American and seven-time champion Serena Williams (+1300) is playing as a wild-card entry. Williams hasn’t competed in a singles tournament since getting injured during the first set of her first-round match at the All England Club in 2021. Serena is one Slam title shy of matching Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24.
No Canadian women are seeded. Leylah Fernandez is +3485 to win. The 19-year-old runner-up of the 2021 U.S. Open lost in the first round last year in her Wimbledon debut.
The men’s and women’s draws are both Friday.
