Team Uruguay
La Celeste, managed by Diego Alonso (his first major tournament in charge), is ranked 14th in the world and the country reached the quarterfinals of the 2018 World Cup, losing 2-0 to France. Uruguay finished third in CONMEBOL qualifying behind powerhouses Brazil and Argentina this time. It will be Uruguay’s first World Cup match in 20 years without former Manager Oscar Tabarez in charge. The side’s best-known player is Luis Suarez, but the best one may now be Federico Valverde, who plays for Real Madrid and was instrumental in that team’s Champions League triumph. There is one injury note as Liverpool star Darwin Nunez limped out of training recently with an ankle issue but was able to return after spending time with the medical team.
Team South Korea
Managed by Paulo Bento, the Taegeuk Warriors are ranked 28th in the world. South Korea’s 10 straight World Cup appearances are the longest by a team outside of Europe or South America. Its best performance in this event was fourth in the 2002 tournament, which it co-hosted with Japan, becoming the first team outside Europe and the Americas to reach the semifinals. The side didn’t get out of the group stage four years ago despite a 2-0 upset of Germany in the final match. South Korea finished second in its World Cup qualifying group behind Iran. The player to watch is Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heungmin, who shared the 2021-22 Premier League Golden Boot Award. He did have surgery early this month to stabilize a fracture around his left eye but is expected to play with a mask. Heungmin scored seven goals in 13 games for South Korea in qualifying for Qatar.
