United States

The Americans got their 2023 World Cup off to a solid start with a 3-0 win over Vietnam at Eden Park Stadium in New Zealand. If people were expecting another opening match result like the US had in the 2019 World Cup, when they absolutely decimated Thailand to the tune of 13-0, they were likely disappointed. The American women’s team, on the other hand, was mostly satisfied with their performance.

“It was a good starting point for our team,” said forward Sophia Smith, “I also know we have a lot more that we can give, a lot more to do, little things to work on.”

Smith, making her World Cup debut, got two goals in the opener, and Lindsey Horan nailed a strike in the 77th minute to lock up the 3-0 win. Smith is now in the books as the second-youngest player in USWNT history to score multiple goals in a World Cup game.

Netherlands

The Netherlands also come into this matchup against the defending champs with an opening game win under their belts. They earned a 1-0 victory against Portugal on July 23rd at Dunedin Stadium. This was Portugal’s first ever showing at the Women’s World Cup.

The game’s only goal was scored in the 13th minute by veteran defender Stefanie van der Gragt with an impressive header past Portugal’s goalkeeper. There was an agonizingly long video review after the goal as it first appeared that there may have been an offside on the play, which would have taken back the Dutch point.

The Netherlands outshot the Portuguese side 12-2 overall and 5-1 on the net. Most interesting was how rough this game got – there were a total of 22 fouls and three yellow cards handed out – one to the Dutch side for Danielle van de Donk and two to Portugal for Diana Gomes and Jessica Silva.
