Team Iran

The Iranians will advance with a win vs. the USA and would win the group if England draw/lose to Wales. A draw for Iran will be enough to move on if Wales draw or lose. Iran won’t reach the knockout round with a defeat. The side was a 2-0 upset winner over Wales last time out after getting crushed 6-2 in the opening match against England. Both goals against Wales, from Roozbeh Cheshmi and Ramin Rezaeian, came in stoppage time when Wales was down to 10 men. Iran has never reached the knockout round of a World Cup.

The Iranian players have constantly been asked during this tournament about the protests in their home country, two months of unrest following the death of a 22-year-old woman while in custody of the country’s morality police. The US Soccer Federation wanted to show its support for the protestors by scrubbing the emblem of the Islamic Republic from Iran’s flag on social media. The favoured Iranian player as an anytime goalscorer is Mehdi Taremi at +275.

Team USA

The United States must win this game to advance and can top Group B with a win if England lose to Wales, or if England draws and the USA wins at least four goals. The Americans are out with a draw or a defeat. They drew with Wales in the opening round 1-1 and then 0-0 against England in the second game – most would agree that Team USA was the better side in that match. The closest chance of a goal came when American star Christian Pulisic hit the crossbar midway through the first half. While the offence hasn’t been great, the defence has been terrific in this tournament when it was thought to be a weak spot.

“There have been a lot of moments in transition where we can be a little bit sharper,” USA player Walker Zimmerman said. “We can pick out that final pass, and hopefully create more. But set pieces is a huge strength for this team. And so, having to go back and look at the plays, watch all of them, see what we can do differently, see what areas we can hit … we want to make sure everyone is doing their job.” The favoured American for first goalscorer is Jesus Ferreira at +195.
