Switzerland vs. Cameroon Betting Analysis
This Group G date marks a wholly original matchup as Switzerland and Cameroon have never come face to face. What better opportunity to get to know each other than on the biggest sports stage in the world?
The Swiss have never won a World Cup, but it hasn’t been for lack of trying. Way, way back in the day Switzerland reached a few quarter-finals, then missed the tournament altogether through the 1970s and 1980s. The nation has either played the round of 16 or at least been present since 2006. In 2014 they gave the Argentines a run for their money with a 1-0 defeat. In 2018, a close contest saw them kneel before the Swedes, again 1-0.
Although few pay close attention to the Indomitable Lions, the truth is they’re almost always present at the World Cup, having played in six of the most recent eight editions. They’re returning after being absentees in Russia 2018. Unlike their Swiss counterparts, however, they are not as prolific in the group stages. Their best effort was 32 years ago in Italy when they played in the quarter-finals. Since then, it’s been “three and done.”
Switzerland
The “A-Team” is once again an intriguing World Cup proposition. Always good but never great. Maybe this time will be different. They may be a case of qualifying a little too early for the tournament. Getting here is fantastic, but their qualifying journey ended literally a year ago in November of 2021. A brilliant effort saw them go undefeated in eight matches, winning five and drawing in three. They even topped a group that included Italy (sorry, Azzurri fans).
However, they slumbered a bit through the UEFA League of Nations, only sporting a 3-3-0 record. This included defeats to both Portugal and Spain, who could be potential roadblocks on their journey sooner or later. At the very least they’re entering on a bit of a high, having paid back Spain 2-1 in September and won against the Czechs 1-0. Stars are midfielder Granit Xhaka (Arsenal), keeper Yann Sommer (Borussia Monchengladbach), and forward Breel Embolo (Monaco).
Cameroon
It’s been a wild 2022 for the Cameroonians and they haven’t even played in Qatar yet! Decent if not great form saw them finish 3rd as hosts of the African Cup of Nations. This was seen as a disappointment, so much so that the manager was fired and replaced with Riogobert Song.
Song then took the team on a bewildering World Cup qualifying run that concluded with a playoff home-away series with favoured Algeria. The home leg saw a bitter 1-0 defeat. The return leg in Algeria was the stuff of legend. Eric-Maxim Choupo-Motin netted in the 22nd minute, which ultimately sent the tie into extra time. Algerian regained a 2-1 lead in the 118th minute before a miraculous goal from Toko Ekambi at 120 +4 minutes. Away goal rules applied, thus sending the Lions to Qatar. Leaders are veteran Vicent Aboukabar (Saudi club Al Nassr), Eric Maxim Choup-Motin (Bayern Munich), and André-Frank Zambo Anguissa (Napoli).
