They’ve been the doormat of the group and now this matchup against the Netherlands – one of the top teams in the tournament – is going to be their last during the Euro 2020.

With Netherlands favored at -455, it doesn’t seem like North Macedonia is in a great position. The Netherlands were able to win their first matchup then follow that up with a 2-0 victory over Austria to qualify for the next round. All signs point towards the Netherlands picking up an easy win here but let’s take a deeper look first.
North Macedonia
North Macedonia is already eliminated, so this final matchup is more about pride for them. They didn’t look that great towards the end of their 3-1 loss against Austria and followed that up with another disappointing loss against Ukraine in their last game. The worst part was that they took 13 shots on net and even held onto the ball for a good amount of time, yet they just could not convert that into goals. This was not the outcome they were hoping for when entering the tournament as they had won three games and drew another in the four games prior to the Euro 2020.
Chances are they will have a tough time picking up a win in this final game against one of the best teams in the group in the Netherlands. North Macedonia allowed five goals in their two matchups against Austria and Ukraine, and those squads aren’t exactly offensive juggernauts. Netherlands is. It will take a lot of discipline and opportunity for this team to win their final game.
Netherlands
The Netherlands don’t even seem like they have hit their stride yet and are still undefeated in the tournament. They were up 2-0 against Ukraine in their first match before stumbling a small bit, eventually winning 3-2. Then they beat Austria 2-0 in their most recent game and was able to give them their sixth straight win in all competitions. Scoring has not been a problem for them at all lately, this team has scored over 1.5 goals in their past nine games out and defending the net has been a problem for North Macedonia in this tournament.
The Netherlands are the clear favorites to pick up a win in this matchup and for good reason. Though we may see their coach Frank de Boer change their starting lineup given how this game may not mean too much. He might want to give some other players some minutes to see how they react. If this team wants to win, their path is very simple: stay aggressive and play the way they have played during their first two games. Their talent alone should be able to stifle North Macedonia, leading them to a victory. This could even be a higher scoring game for either side if they play like they have nothing to lose.
