Team Netherlands

The Oranje are ranked No. 8 in the world and pretty much advance to the knockout round every year after shockingly missing the tournament in 2018. The Netherlands won Group A with seven points and surrendered just one goal in their matches vs. Senegal, Ecuador and Qatar. Cody Gakpo leads the Dutch with three goals in this tournament, the first Dutchmen to have one in all three group games. He joined James Rodríguez and Lionel Messi (both 2014) among the only players to score in each of their team’s first three World Cup games at any of the last five tournaments. Davy Klaassen has two assists and a goal. Young star Xavi Simons, who is coveted across Europe and was a late surprise pick by Louis Van Gaal for the World Cup, has yet to play. Gakpo is +200 to be an anytime goalscorer here, but Memphis Depay is the +175 favourite.

Team USA

The Americans, ranked 16th in the world, haven’t won a Round of 16 World Cup match since 2002 when they beat Mexico. The USA had to win its final group stage game against Iran on Tuesday to advance and did 1-0 as star Christian Pulisic found the net on Sergino Dest’s headed cross in the 38th minute to finish second in Group B. Pulisic, who scored his 22nd international goal, collided with the Iranian keeper, suffered an abdominal injury and was hospitalized for a spell but says he will play in this match.  Pulisic is +400 for an anytime goal. Josh Sargent was replaced by Haji Wright in the 75th minute after landing awkwardly on his right foot while avoiding a tackle and Sargent’s status is TBA. Dest, incidentally, was born in the Dutch town of Almere, about 12 miles east of Amsterdam. He came through the famed Ajax academy and turned professional there. Goalkeeper Matt Turner has kept two clean sheets so far, marking the first time that the USA has recorded multiple shutouts at the World Cup since 1930. Dest, Weston McKennie, Tim Ream, Kellyn Acosta and Tyler Adams all carry yellow cards into the Round of 16 match against the Netherlands.
